Cool demo of Linux XGL desktop makes Vista look like crap...

Wait until the cube multimonitor thing comes up - VERY cool. Stretches your desktop across the surface of a cube. I can see that being useful on a laptop when you can't have multimon, but you'd can have the next best thing.

Ok.. Ok.. This just makes me want to mess with Linux more and more.. Is there a distro that's not too hard to install that has a really cool and easy to use GUI? I know it won't be "just like" windows, but what are the limitations as to what you can do with Linux? I saw in that one that he was watching a DVD and what not.. What about games? How well do they/don't they work if they're not offered for a Linux platform? I've got a spare laptop hard drive just laying around, so I may try putering with it on my laptop first then moving on to one of my other computers. Because this stuff is just truly amazing to me.. Also, what kinds of specs do you think this guy had going? Just one of my many curiosities..

You should probably use Mandriva Live 2006. It has the best support for SATA drives. And, if you really like it, you can install it locally.

The most complete live distro is PClinux, but it can be a pain in the butt if you sata drives.

Linux is not really that bad to get set up. The GUI is either KDE or Gnome. There are others such as ICEWM, but they are ugly. KDE is the most windowesqe and probably would make a transition from windows to linux more bearable.

Also another suggestion is to use an NVidia video card or an older ati (9600<) card. Ati drivers really suck bad for linux.

If not Mandriva then Suse 10.1. I installed it on a spare hdd I had laying around. On my asus rig with a nvidia 7800gt I didnt have to install a driver one. Everything worked flawless and havnt had any troubles. Tried RedHat and what a pain compared to Suse. Suse in VMware blows compared to an actual install on hdd.

I was playing around with a couple live cds and installed kubunto onto my spare computor. It was really easy. Almost ot easy. I do have a problem with it though. At the login screen I have to restart the x-server or the screen resolution is off. Should be an easy fix if I keep it. I had gentoo on one once. It seemed a lot harder back then it is now though.

Not really a version, it's an overlay.. According to wiki I'm supposed to be able to apply it over Suse 10.1... Will be trying it after I get it figured out..

Try that if you don't want to install linux to see this. I haven't actually used it but have heard good things about this livecd. It was built specifically as a demonstration of XGL.

I also saw a really nice video of quake3 being played across the edge on the cube. I think OpenGL performance is not a problem with XGL. The problem though is it's very new and is constantly being worked on. It's very much beta at this point.

All i have to say is as far as distro's of OS's goes, everyone better watch out cause when Linux resolves ALL compatability problems its gonna be say **** the rest!!!!!

Just installed Suse Enterprise Desktop on my laptop and it is fkn sweet! It has the XGL but my video adapter doesnt have the guts to run it. Controls are a lot different than regular 10.1, they are a lot easier to get to.

I finally got to play around with this last night. The only system I could find that would run it was my home machine w/ a GeForce 6800OC. Machines here at the office == no go. It even fried the HDD in my iMac.

But still, it was very impressive once I got it running.
