I'm helping my 16 year-old son out with a movie he's making for his film club and one of the guys that is 'supposed' to be an editor decided to freak out and is holding all of their footage hostage - this is a film that MUST be finished by Monday to enter in a film-making contest and they have a lot of editing left to do. There is a DVD of the first cut that was burned by this guy, and basically they're up the creek without a paddle if they can't get this done (sound still needs to be added, scenes changed/added/deleted - you get my drift).

What I need to do is rip this DVD in the BEST quality possible and it is in VOB format. I have no experience with this and for the past couple of hours I've been testing various ripper software from the internet and I'm still not happy - besides the fact that all of these cost $35 to download - which would be fine if I knew which one was actually the best. I need to be able to rip it into MPEG, MPEG2 and at least AVI.

Can someone here (someone with experience that knows) tell me what their experiences are with DVD rippers - NOT copiers, but actual rippers that allow ripping to files.

I have used NERO Vision in the past. Its great for dvd to avi or avi to dvd. It also allows for editing
*avi-avi,mpeg,mpeg2,mov,etc

Thanks for your reply, I ended up with getting Cucusoft's Converter Pro 7.07 and it turned out great. I tested at least 16 apps to see what ripped in the best quality and something that wasn't just thrown out there without at least some support - the interface is also pretty nice and that was a bonus.

It does the job and I'm actually pretty impressed with the results and the support is pretty good too.
