98SE annoyance

I am working on a machine which boots painstakingly slow.
After it gets to the point where AVG has run it's boot scan it goes to the 98se splash screen and then to a black screen and sits there with a C:\ for 60 secs about exact.
Practically everything is cut from the startup except AVG, and the only thing listed in autoexec is AVG period. What is causing this drag and how can I fix it?

Dump win98 and install Win2K.

Make sure DMA mode is enabled on your hard drive in Device Manager.

Mor than likely, though, you have a spyware or virus infection.

Refer to my detailed spyware removal procedure here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml

Afterwards you should run a full virus scan from SAFE MODE.

Hope this helps...

Good point. If you have a network card installed and there's nothing connected to it, Win98 waits about 60 seconds before it timesout waiting for a DHCP server.

I did not know this! Thanks for that! I'll have to keep it in mind. :)
