Strange Error Message

Post by chewmanfoo »

Hey,

The following error message pops up on my Windows XP Pro computer at work a couple dozen times a day. I know what the WMI service is, but I haven't been able to find any information about why the error messages are coming up.

Application popup: wmiprvse.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x77f57ec4" referenced memory at "0x00001000". The memory could not be "written".

I believe the messages started coming up after I installed MS Office 2003, but I've reinstalled it and downloaded all of the latest updates from http://www.officeupdate.com. There are no viruses or spyware on my system.

Any ideas?

There are some viruses that pretend to be Wmiprvse.exe. Make sure the only copy of that file is located in your \windows\system32 folder, and that it scans clean for viruses.

This is one example: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyse ... ebotb.html

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. WMIPRVSE.EXE was missing from the C:\windows\system32 folder. I'm sure this was part of the problem. Not sure how it was deleted or if it was ever there in the first place. I copied the file to C:\windows\system32 from the C:\i386 folder. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
