window 8.1 Mpegs with thumbnails? No?

Post by Koo Koo Mouse »

Hi Guys!

I'm puzzled on this one. I cannot view a movie clip thumbnail IF and only IF it ends with the extension .mpeg.
I've dug through google and I am not alone. A lot of fixes were cured by a simply checking or unchecking a box in two important places. Mine were good. I'll break this down a bit.

. This using 8.1. win 7 never had this problem.

. File associations can be set to open with any player. no changes except the players icon.

. The players I have are media player (windows) Classic Media player and SMplayer + some other editing players.

. These movies are all stored on a data only drive from my old comp and everthing is there. (slave drive
. The movies play fine on any player with / open with dropdown.

Things I haven't tried since a google search.

. Update to the latest K-lite codecs (Movies play fine though?)

. Download some big ass bloated player that I don't think with fix a THUMNAIL issue! come on! LOL.

I don't know. Such a simple little problem. Ya I know its small but when you have a big folder it is so much easyier to spot a kid or cat face than trying to read the nonsense file I named it. :)

Have a great next year everone! :kookoo

Grab VLC Media Player. I've yet to come across a file it will not play.

It's probably the last player you'll ever need. I've never needed to install any codecs. Plays all my mpg, mpeg, mp4, mkv, etc........

Try changing the extension to mpg.

I use GOM player in Win7 and get thumbnails - dunno about 8.1. VLC is also pretty good.

I guess I try that VCL player but its really not a player problem. Its a thumbnail viewer problem with mpeg's.

EXE.. I did that. no change.. Thanks! :)

VCL is in now. Works great! BUT No mpeg or mpg's will show as a thumbnail, just the players icon still.

I'm seeing the same issue on my daughter's Windows 8.1 laptop. I haven't installed any 3rd party codecs or players so it's something Microsoft did.

Probably something to do with the internal codec. I have the same problem in Win7 with some AVIs that are either DivX or Xvid.

Checked my Win8 PC and yeah, some MPGs have thumbs and some don't

You might want to drop those files in GSpot to see if they are not standard in any way.

You can make your own thumbnails if you want. Just create a JPG or PNG file with the same file name (for instance if the video is MYMOVIE.MPG make the thumbnail file MYMOVIE.JPG). Windows will ALWAYS display the thumbnail from the image file (if present) over a thumb generated from the video.

BTW: This is a handy way to prevent Windows from displaying objectionable thumbnails. Just make your own.

Good tip there FP. Thanks!

You mentioned nonstandard and I got to thinking. ooh! :s cratch

I had a program on the win7 machine that I do not have on the 8.
Pretty sure it was called avs4you video director and every file output was saved as an Mpeg and those really look the only ones won't show a thumb and they are mpegs, not mpg.

I think we have this figured out for the most part! I use power director 12 now and have had no issues view thumbs saved as any exertion..
Thank you!!

I convert everything to .MP4 video now because Media Center can play those without any hiccups or glitches, and allows you to skip forward and back without issues. MP4 is also pretty standard for all tablets now. Media Center doesn't play .mkv files without a hack and a codec upgrade, and I've never found one that runs stable. I also prefer to keep Media Center completely pristine to avoid issues. Codec add-ons usually don't play nice with Media Center.

Most torrents are .MKV or .MP4 nowadays. Divx and XVid is going the way of the Dodo, thankfully.

Even YouTube HD direct downloads are in MP4.

I use Any Video Converter Ultimate. The free version does 95% of what most people would want, but the Ultimate version adds screen capture and ability to download from more streaming sites other than YouTube.
