2000 vs. XP
what are the pros and cons of each? I have both, I'm just wondering which one I should install. I assume all the driver issues for XP should be thinned out by now. My friend is runnin 2000 and he seems to love it...but I'm still curious, which one to should I install?

XP all the way... If you don't like the gay look of XP u can make it look just like 2K... XP is NT 5.1. Its a lot faster than 2k is. It runs smoother... I've had it installed for 4 months now and don't have any problems with it and i'm constantly upgrading and installing different hardware. Overall they are both pretty similar XP's just faster.
I will second XP. I used and loved 2K but XP has everything that 2K had and more. The only reason I can think of not to use 2K is if there is some software that you must use that wont work in XP. XP seems much more tweakable than 2K was and every bit as stable. I dont use most of the eye candy but it sure is nice to have the option to change the look of things if it gets boring. Also XP has so much built into it like burning software, unzipping software, etc. Granted I have installed 3rd party software for most of these fetures anyway but it is again nice to have a choice. Once I became acustumed to XP I think it would be very hard to go back to 2K

W2k all the way.....for now. Way too much bloat in XP and anything that needs a major update within a couple of weeks of hitting the market. Anybody ever but the first year model of new car??? I want at least one year of a software out there so it can get some fixes on it. I do appreciate those of you using it and getting it ready for me this fall. Tuned right, W2k is great. I do plan on putting it on one of laptops to start to get the feel of it though. Thank you MSDN!!!!

Win2000 all the way, especially when you have SCSI in your system, XP seems to have some big issues with SCSI.
I doubt WinXP will be noticably faster than Win2000 on the same setup.
I might look at XP after the first service pack, which was delayed a couple times already and might be available for downoad around september this year.
WinXP is not worth the money for the few updates when you already have Win2000.

Check out http://www.ntcompatible.com for compatibility problems. If you plan on running any old DOS games, I would say go WinXP since it has support for that kinda stuff... Win2k is a hardcore networking OS with major stability. Want to kill a program? CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill it on the spot, no waiting like in 98SE for the "end now" dialog box to pop up (this is probably the same with XP though).
Win2k is not necessarily a gaming OS, though you can game on it obviously. I've never had a problem with it running anything I've had (minus those old dos games which I never played anyway). Now, I did have some problems with DVD playback on my ATI card, but that was fixed with an updated DVD player (which has a cool new skin also
)
There are features I like of XP though. The logon screen looks real cool and some of the new features in the GUI are nice. Win2k doesn't have any of that and that would almost make me think it would run faster than XP but I dunno--don't have any facts to back me up. I would also think that since Win2k has been out longer, it has a larger driver database to choose from. Again, can't backup that statement with anything else than what I've observed.
I'd say you can't go wrong with either.

Win2K all the way here too. It's now running on all 4 PCs here. I have XP Pro, had it running on one PC and THAT PC ran slower with XP. If you have to "de-tune" XP to make it more like Win2K, why not just use Win2K? I also didn't use that PC much, it's a spare but not only does XP STILL have many driver related issues, to me it's BS in that they changed things around from how they are on all the other MS OSs that most of us have by now come accustomed to.
I'll stick with Win2K until (perhaps) MS invents a better OS, better than XP. Win2K also runs best on all my PCs here, from my kids older PII 400mhz PC to my newer laptop that initially arrived with ME. Win2Ks fast, stable, has no apparent driver issues anymore and so it wins in my book. XP also had no new features that I needed so whatever the claims might be, I never saw it.
No probs with any games here using Win2K, not even my older DOS based games. XP had some problems with those however.
Now, if anyone says XP has optional XP Plus and Win2K doesn't, I found a way to run Win98 Plus on Win2K. You first need to install Win98, then '98 Plus and 'upgrade' (vs fresh install) to Win2K. Doing that keeps all the Win98 Plus themes, etc working if you like that stuff and if it's a factor. I did that on 3 PCs here so far, might re-do the 4th depending on how my next mobo upgrade turns out.

So everyone thinks 2000 or XP is the way to go? Better than 98??
I could put 2000 on my system, have it never tried it. Got it free with a system I built a freind, he wanted 98 instead so I kept the full version of 2000.
I heard there were some issues with one of them sendng info back to MS, I think that was XP not sure.
As far as I'm concerned I like my privacy, and MS has no business knowing I even have a computer let alone whats on it! They got their money, that's all they need to know about anythng!
I don't register my hardware
I don't regsiter my software
and the only reason I register my car is thats the only way to buy the plate that stops the cops from pulling you over for not having one! Otherwise I would buy the plate and NOT register the car either!
Oh yea, and I don't register my guns I would use to shoot you with If I caught you stealing the car or computer!
I am kinda like a non-registering addict!
