I have a P4 3 GHz and the temps are worrying me.

Antec Sonata Case
Abit IS-10 Motherboard
HT enabled WIN2K
Stock Intel HSF
Arctic Silver II
Measured with MBM5 in room temperature of 22/72

Do these temps sound right? Would it make a difference if replace the AS2 with Arctic Silver 5 or CoolerMaster Premium?

No worrys there, you may want to get a better hs, but your p4 will thermally throttle itself down if it gets to warm

I think you case temps are high. How many Case fans do you have and what is their layout? Also are the cables neat or are they all over the place blocking air flow? If you can get your case temps down the CPU temps will follow.

those temps are not very high for a sonata. Thermal grease upgrade is really not the answer.20.00 into a decnt HS should calm any worries you have

I thought about getting the Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu HSF to replace the stock and a Panaflo 120x120x38mm FBA12G12L-1A fan to go behind the hard drive cage on the Sonata. Of course some Arctic Silver 5.

Currently the rear case fan is plugged into the the FAN ONLY connector but I like the quietness. If I plug it in a regular socket the noise is a lot louder. I'm hoping the above extra Panaflo fan and HSF will improve temps.

Also I've heard more ethan once that Abit boards tend to report temps higher than normal so maybe I have nothing to worry about. I just need to quit being a slave to these temps and get to some serious computing.

Only way to know for sure is to get a hardware temp probe then you can know for certain what the temps are. I still think your case temps are high. By comparison I never see case temps over 90F unless it is middle of summer and I have not turned on the A/C and the ambient is that high as well. As I type this my case temp is at 78F and that is under a full load 24/7.

The Sonata is a different story.. It only has 1 fan when you buy it. a 120mm in the rear. Then you can add (which he hasn't added yet) another 120mm to the front. I would think that the addition of the front 120mm fan would certainly aid in taming those temps. But the Sonata is made to be quiet and maintain temps that the computer can run at the same time w/o water cooling..

Yeah I was just reading about the Sonata case. I guess it is a trade off, if you want it quiet it is going to run hotter. Personally I find the fan noise some what reassuring and I tend to be somewhat anal about temps. That is why I have 5 case fans plus the PS fan and a huge 80x80x38mm Delta on my CPU

You're not the only one. This time of year my case temp is about 65*F and my cpu temps are 32-34*C. he he he.. I have 2 intake 2 exhause and a 2 fan PSU and a HD cooler w/1 40mm fan and a 92mm on my SLK-900A..

Those temps are fine... nothing to worry about. Even if they get to high, the CPU has thermal throttling which'll reduce clock speed instantly to run at lower temperatures. I have a friend with a very similar setup (w/ 3GHz and Abit board) w/ a stock heatsink/fan. When i installed it i scraped off the pad and put on Arctic Silver. It idles at about 35C and full load is about 40C i think. He has an Antec case.... four 80mm fans i believe, but his case temp wasn't any lower than yours. Honestly, i think temperature is exaggerated on these forums... I've had an Athlon 1.33GHz tbird running at 140F (60C) for the last 3 years or so and it hasn't had a problem... runs 24/7.

My P4 runs about 45 C while brosing and gets up to 53 C after playing Quake 3. The case temp is 33C. I have a BeanTech Igloo case (all aluminum) with three 80mm fans.
