New MB = cooler CPU?!?!?!

Post by TheDude »

I recently upgraded from an Intel PBZ875 mainboard to an Asus P4C800-E.

After installing the new MB I noticed a drop of about 7 degress C on the CPU (from 37C at idle on the Intel to 30C at idle on the Asus).

I use a zahlman Al/Cu heatsink / fan, which was in use on the Intel board.

Is this really possible? Or is it simple the differences between the heat sensors on the two boards? If so, which do you think was more accurate?

If anyone has any insight here I would appreciate it...it's driving me crazy :)

That's probably what it is.. Don't know which board is more trustworthy.. You might try installing a seperate probe for more temps. Also, could have to do with the application of the grease/paste (if this applied for intel chips [AMD Guy] and the seating of the HSF.. GL eGo

I'm using artic silver 3. I guess it's possible that the cooler is better seated than on the old board, or that the sensor is different on the two boards. I dont know why Asus would do something different than the Intel reference design for temp monitoring, is it a safe bet that Asus knew better? I don't know how that sits with me, maybe im just too un-trusting.

Well....

It could very well be the diff boards temp probes.. Each company chooses to use a different kind of probe I'm sure.. So Who knows..

Different mobo's do read temps differently but none are 100% accurate. Only way to be sure is to place a temp sensor under the cpu. Most sensors are not thin enough though. The hardcano II is one of the few that has them that thin, almost like thin fishing line.

Though some mobo's can read from the diode. That way would be closer to being accurate.

Thanks blade...turns out the Asus is reading from the diode, while the Intel is using a socket sensor. I would assume that the Asus is more accurate, and the CPU is just cooler than I had thought previously.

Thanks for the info on the hardcano II...know where I can pick one up?

Sorry, forgot all about this. Best place I know if to get the hardcano II is here. It looks nice too.

Also, I recently changed from an asus to a shuttle mobo and the cpu runs around 5-7 degrees hotter on the shuttle.

*edit

The probe fits under an AMD cpu, not sure about an intel cpu.
