New TBred...

Hey Guys.. I'm getting my new processor in a couple of days and I'm curious about the overclocking potential of this CPU. I bought if off NewEgg.. It's an XP1800+/266FSB TBred core.. Will I have any decent luck overclocking this with my K7S5A? I know I'm limited on bus speeds, but I was just curious about how high I could go with this processor and board. LMK I plan on building another system in a few months but wanted to see what I could do with the parts I already have. TIA eGo

looks like 1.8 is realistic w/out unlocking

i ordered one too because they are cheap and my nforce unlocks them - we'll see

you won't overclock it much at all on that board... no vcore adjustment no multiplier adjustment and limited FSB adjustment...

Ok.. The new processor arrived today. When I get home I am going to install it in my New K7S5A w/512mb of SDR (I'm going to upgrade to DDR w/my next paycheck) and my Radeon Saphire 9000. I need to know the do's and don'ts.. Mind you, I'm not stupid, but I've got 3 dead CPUs already and I don't want another. Two of them are due to the Asus board. The other was DOA from private party. I have a Static Discharge wrist band I always wear when messin' with the computers. But I am actually more worried about crushing/cracking the core. This is a retail CPU, so will the instructions that come with it be enough to walk me through this succesfully? I appreciate all thougts.. eGo

what heatsink u using on the cpu? but just put it flat on the chip and clip in the side that doesnt need the screw driver to install, thenkeeping the heatsink pushed on the core use a screwdriver to attach the other side ot the clip to the socket.

Gonna use the one that comes with the processor for now. I'll probably upgrade to a different one once I start modding the case. I'm not going to OC it just yet so the stock should be fine. I would assume? eGo

CPU Shim

I have a CPU shim that I bought with a previous CPU.. Is this a must? or even a good idea? Should I just throw the stupid thing out? I think that's what killed my previous CPUs because I don't think the Thermal Tape on the HSF had good contact w/the CPU because of the shim.. Possible? Lemme know what you think.. eGo

I'd just throw it out.. i've yet to crush a core with a heatsink... I did take a chip off of one with a bad HSF design but it was tiny and barely noticable...

It's ALIVE!!!

Good to know John.. I'm gonna be buying one or two more XPs soon. One more for my other K7S5A and another to go in a different board as I'm going to go for an OC on that one. But that one is gonna be my showbox.. lol.. GL with the new CPU.. eGo

I don't even know if it's worth messing with on this board. But they CPU supports the 266FSB and right now it's only at 133 and I can't find anything to make it go higher. I'm guessing this is the ceiling for this board? K7S5A Pred? eGo
