I have a Pentium 166 with an OCTEK motherboard. Is there any way that I can overclock this to a faster speed such as 180 or maybe even 200 Mhz?

well, the board probably has jumpers to ajust the multipler...try changing it to a higher one.

if my memory serves me the older non mmx p1's top out at over 200 mhz n- you might take a look at the cpu database at overclockers.com for an idea of what is possible

Thanks for your help. Yesterday morning I did have a look at OCAU's PC.DB, and i saw that some guy has the same CPU as i do (P166 MMX), and he somehow managed to boost it to 266 Mhz. If I was to do that, would I need to add another CPU fan or some other form of cooling? Its just got the stock Socket 7 style heatsink/fan assembly now, but i have a buttload of spare fans, if i would need to add one. What i should do when i get a chance is find out the model of the board and google it.

I dunno... i ran my P1 with only a heatsink without a fan for 5 years, overclocking can't make it too hot if you already have a fan on it. Even pentium 4's run cool, i wouldn't think you'd have a problem, but if you have some artic silver hanging around, i'd assume it would be smart to throw some of that on? I never had it on mine, and i remember the first time i set eyes on thermal paste, it was with an AMD 266, and it had a thermal pad on it .not knowing what it was it was scraped off the heatsink with a butter knife and then the cpu was fried. *sigh* Does anyone know if artic silver goes well with p1's? i know the core is completely different than an athlon, but i dunno. The bottom line is your not going to get too much out of a 1995 computer if i were you i'd just slap freebsd on it and keep it to mess around with.
