De capped my old K6-2.... oh crap! and other words of warning

So i'm new to this overclocking stuff...

I thought i'd give it a go with my old setup which is (was) a Gigabyte GA5AX mobo with a K6-2 500 CPU and 320Megs of PC100 RAM.

Got the core voltage up to 2.4 and the FSB to 110, 5x multiplier giving 550 MHz. Rock steady. No glitches.

I got the bug man.....

Fiddled with the voltage, multipliers and FSB for a while but couldn't get any better than 550.

Went searching the net for articles on o'cing the K6-2 chip and came across one about de capping the processor and dropping the heatsink right on top of it. That sounds like a great idea!!!

Strange yet oh so slight crackling noise.... strange smell..... THAT smell!!!

Sh*t - get the power lead out....!

I think I was too late... the beast lies still... not a beat from it's heart... except the cooling fan, it still works!!

Can't get a peep out of it now.

So my question is this - is the mobo dead or is it just the processor? I can live with the guilt if it's just the processor. Let's face it I can get a second hand one on ebay for 25 quid.

Anyone care to comment? All ribbing taken with ease on the chin!! :(

lol should just be the CPU. when U decap, you have to make sure with the k6's you dont get any gupe on anything besides the core. and to be careful when putting on the heatsink, as to not crush the core.

I think I've crushed something when I put the heatsink on because I decapped the chip and had a quick look at it then powered it up with the cap placed back on top and it worked OK.

It was only when I tried it nekkid that it went berserk.

It the K6's fault anyway - it MADE me do it - honest!

hey, welcome to the club!

lol wvjohn. I don't have a digital camera or even a webcam so I'm sorry but I won't be able to share my handywork with you all! )*

I forgot to mention earlier, but i even tried to support the heatsink with rubber pads in each corner of the CPU but it obviously didn't make any difference. That sucker was going down no matter which way you look at it!!!

Wish I had a spare mobo i could try it out on..... just to make sure......
