Hey guys, I have a problem with one of the motherboards that I sold. It was sold to someone in the army, who is stationed in Germany, so it was shipped overseas. I sent it through USPS Priority mail, and when he received it, one of the capacitors had apparently broken off during shipment.

The motherboard in question is the MSI K7T Turbo Limited Edition(KT133A chipset). The capacitor that was broken off was the C634 capacitor. Well, the guy I sold it to took the board to 3 different electronic repair techs who said that it could not be fixed.

Now I'm turning to you guys, as well as those guys at the [H]ard fourms as my last hope of having it repaired or am I just SOL? Anyways, here are some pictures of the problem itself. I will update my post with a picture of the back of the board where there is apparently trace damage..just thought I'd get a headstart.

Let me know if you think it can be repaired..

Todays mobos have at least 4 layers, so it's not easy to swap parts on them.

The capacitor might be replacable but I dunno about your "back of the board where there is apparently trace damage".

What packaging did you use for shipping?
Please try to post a pic of the trace damage.

I shipped it in a FedEx (turned inside out) box with peanuts inside. I thought that would be enough, but I guess you never know what will happen when you ship it overseas. Unfortunately, the guy I was keeping in communication with is now out in the field, so his friend (the one who purchased the board) sent it back to me..

Anyways, I'll try to get a pic of the trace damage, lets just hope it turns out nice with my HP camera. I don't even know if they even tried out the board as-is, so that may be a route I'll try out.

That looks like a seriously easy fix... Go to radio shack pick up a 3600 Microfarad cap 10v rated and solder it in... the number of layers has nothing ot do with how hard it will be to solder it... Looks like a real clean break from the top. All you need is a solder sucker or that wirey stuff that absorbs hot solder to clean the board with. put the new cap in and solder it in clip the leads and u should be set. I have a 300Watt car amp that i've repaired 3 times now. First time blew one mosfet... 2nd time i claimed 3 of them. Damn ice chest plug leaked all over my amp...lol 3rd time the RCA inputs the groun on them broke loose. Its a 6 layer board. Just be sure to get the polarity of the cap the right direction... lol When i was in trade school we did a lot of electronics stuff.. i'v eforgot most be we actually built a capacitor that would hold a charge. It was rather cool... The coolest thing we built in a team of 3. We made an electronic dice game... Using digital chips and 2 number leds... the other classes got to vote on the coolest project and we won... Free lunch at red lobster compliments of the school. It would roll random number between 1 and 6 had to design the whole thing them wire it up on a bread board. We won some good money on that on our breaks
