having skipped the AMD XP cycle and the P4 256K cycle, I ordered a 1.6A and an MSI Ultra SIS 645 mobo. We'll see how it compares. Most sites report at least 2.2 out of this combo. NewEgg says it's on the truck

mobo and cpu arrived today - got the good sl668 malay bo stepping - overclockers reports that the average oc on these is to 2351
the cpu is tiny - 2/3 size of amd and the hs/f is huge - bigger than anything i have for amd - it also attaches with two levers - center it and close the levers and it's on....sounds too simple...where's the part where you get out your popsicle sticks and screwdrivers? how can you install a heatsink without bleeding on the mobo....more details letter....i ordered a 400w ps but i guess i'll have to pull out the mobo in my case with the 350w which is p4 compatible for the time being -

it is a 2500 rpm 80mm fan

and you're right, all you have to do is flip the levers and it is on. bout time someone designed something rational - the hdd is louder than the fan
got it up and running tonight, just the usual glitches
for fun i thought i'd start with a 150 fsb overclock (1.6 > 2.4)
upped the cpu voltage to 1.5 and dialed up the fsb
booted without a hitch - i am seriously impressed with this rig - as far as i know the memory settings are all default - haven't even looked at them yet
2.4 from a 133$ cpu and an $80 mobo and a $90 stick of ram is gooooood value in my book
it was also neat that i didn't have to load any 4/1 drivers
the mobo has a web based flash utility, so you just log onto the website and push the button to upgrade the bios
i'm doing an article on this build and i'll fill in the details then

I had a board with that once...and the web update killed it.

I'm skipping the Insmell Northwood cycle and waiting for the AMD Hammer .

Even at 2.0+ GHz, the IPC of the Intel chips is pretty weak. Whatever turns you on tho, as this is just my opinion.

started running video benches and it wasn't stable on 3dmark - i turned down the fsb to 133 and it worked fine so far - haven't really had the time to play with the memory settings - the cpu obviously has a lot of overhead - 3dmark scores withan 8500 default were in the 89xx range - hopefully this week i will have some time to fool with it - cutting grass and soccer games interferes with "technical research"
