ABIT BH 6 + Celeron 900 Problems Ideas?

Post by WeekendWarrior »

I have an Abit bh 6 rev 1.0 with ss bios.
I had a cerleron 300 a @ 450 for 3 years or so running fine. I just got a Celeron 900 mhz cpu and a generic slotket.
It first booted up fine but as soon as I tried to play games or mp3's ...I got weird artifacts in the textures and lockups in quake 3 etc.....some games and music would screech and pop until the sound clipped and locked up.
I tried different video cards removed the sound ,network cards and swapped ram in and out.
Now it locks on boot up.
Does anyone think I should try another slotket if I can find one?
IS is possible my bios is messed up? should I reflash?
I notice funny activity in the bios screens now...like the graphics are slow to come up when you change pages, the memory count sort of cycles from right to left....strange.
any ideas?
I had the 900 soft menu set to
CPU Operating Speed: User Define
Turbo frequency: Disabled
Ext. Clock (PCI): 100Mhz (1/3)
Multiplier Factor: X9
SEL100/66# Signal: Low or High (same results)
AGPCLK/CPUCLK: 2/3
L2 Cache Latency: Default
Speed Error Hold: Disabled

CPU Power Supply: Default 1.75 (tried 1.80 etc same)

system is :
Abit BH6 rev 1.0 ss bios
Maxtor Diamond max 40 gig 7200 rpm hdd
Ricoh cdrw
384 megs of ram
tried voodoo 3 3000 agp and geforce 2 mx 400 same crashes with fresh install of drivers and windows.
sb live
mid tower case with 250 psu
any ideas? i dont want to get a new mobo for this cpu....this is for the kids I want to build an AMD system for me.
thanks for any ideas

Well, just to get things straight. I had a 566@850. Def voltage. No probs at all. Tryed OC'ing it to 952MHz(1.7V?) and that worked too :) Had the SS BIOS, 1 stick of 128MB NEC RAM, and a Abit Slotket.
So the mobo should be able to run the 900 with no probs i think.

I would trye one stick of RAM first... and then maybe trie another slotket. Sorry... dont have any more ideas :(

Good luck though!

I know that on some older BX mbs like my P2B-S, any stepping past cbo wont work due to internal voltage changes made in the cco and subsequent steppings. The slotkit doesn't make a difference.

I tried this with a 900(they are all cdo steppings) in my p2b-s and it gave me a bios bootup warning of incorrect settings while my 600 cbo worked fine at 900.

I'm not familiar with the bh-6 mb though so best to check abit first if they have any info. :)

Well I'm running a 1.0 gig celery on a p-299b baby at asus board zx chipset using an asus
370dl slotkit,a-ok.My bios is original that came with board and it booted up as 1000 PIII.
Close enough for a 3yr 0ld bios.My buddy is using a bh6 rev 1.1,1.0 gig celery,generic slotket
boots up as a PIII 856 with his old bios but sissoft show it as a 1.0 gig celeron,so were waiting
on the bios upgrade.Only prob with his was the intel heatsink was too big,and was wedged
between the p/s and the green chipset heatsink, had to have heatsink machined down.Ok now but a tight squeeze.Go to the cpu/o/cing or m/b forum at Anand, look for" oldfart" he knows lots about the bh6 and
cpu upgrades.

i found that the msi slotkets worked best for me (i was using a msi 6163 pro bx) - generic slotkets were unstable and the asus slotket i tried worked ok, but it was too tall for my case- i think there is a real difference in the signal, voltage quality etc when you use one of the better slotkets
