Is this an IRQ problem

Building a budget system for a mate.......out with the Celelry 500 in with the Elite Group K7S5A and a Duron at 1gig

All the rest is sameas his old one........HDD ATA66, PCI TNT2 (I know its slow, but soon to be changed) and the probable hassle maker.......Live Value!

It boots slow as hell..out with the Live! card, boots like lightning ...took out the modem and installed Sound card........OK I know Live fills the registry, and it slows boot down a lot.......but in with the modem......and its slow again.

How do I change IRQ (couldnt install DOS drivers SB16 support cos it just locked everytime I got that far....)

Should I have..........a :d one a clean install (I didn't just uninstalled etc) b: binned the Live! as thet are proneto this cack c:got an AGP card straight up d:all the above.

Once its booted it fine and fast.........but it shows in boot up that the DOS drivers were the problem, hence me not installing em and disbling then in Win98SE

This is a SIS chipset I think, not VIA so I was hopefull for the Live!

Should I have reinstaled and made him start from scratch?

Cheers people

I would say option a:
I guess you already tried to swap the cards around in the PCI slots?
Check the mobo manual, when you're lucky you can find a list with AGP/PCI slots and their corresponding Interupts (INT-A, INT-B, INT-C, INT-D ). My Asus A7V133 manual has a detailed list.

The system itself should work fine with the hardware you have, just make sure that the SBLive doesn't have to share an interupt, they don't like it.

The bootup message with Live DOS drivers might be some old junk from the old installation, so they can give you trouble even though you didn't enable the DOS emulation in the new installation, which was just put on top of the old one, right ?

hey, Doc cheers man..was hoping someone would reinforce some thoughts I have had. One of those is this.........this motherboard INSISTS on using IRQ5 for the USB support......and that is the Live! IRQ too.

How would I change it........? Is it in device manager.......it was days ago, but its bothering me....I am sure I tried to adjust IRQ and it wouldnt let me.

I think its reinstall time first.

Shame about all this really......seems to be a real nice board....loads of toys. loads of PCI slots, AC97 (disabled obviously) AGP4x ATA 100......nice and quick on Sandra......even with regular PC100 it flies.

I know from my manual that the USB on my A7V133 shares INT-D with PCI slots 4 and 5 ...

My SB!Live in my Linuxbox on that A7V133 is using IRQ10 and I have no probs. Just swap the card into a different PCI slot and see if that helps with the IRQ problem.

I think a clean OS installation is the first step to fix the problem, swapping cards should be the second step.
