Need a little help with this SMC7004ABR 4-Port Router.

Post by VFAA »

I've had this Router for some time now and I still haven't figured a way on which ports I should open in order to recieve ICQ files. I talked to SMC technical support but they only gave me a tutorial on how to do it for ICQ98. I've got the latest ICQ 2001b Built #3659 and it's a different way to set it up. They say there's no difference but for a user like me who knows little about networking it's hard. Can anyone tell me how to do it for that version of ICQ? It's been a nightmare.

Also, I only play 1 game which is Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2002 Professional Edition on the net but I can't join nor host games. Anyone know which ports should be open or triggers applied in order to play it online? Thanks in advance.

Can't help you, but there is a good SMC router forum at http://www.dslreports.com.

Although I have that router too, I can't imagine why it'd have any problems with any program such as ICQ if it works fine with your browser otherwise.

Might you also have any additional firewall protection like ZA or Network Ice that'd be more likely to block a programs access if that particular program wasn't allowed permission?

I'm not using ICQ anymore but I have no problems here with any browser, Gamespy, Musicmatch and my son uses AOL chat (which is similar to ICQ) w/o any problems here on several PCs.

If you use a firewall program like ZoneAlarm (which I do), open it and look at the "programs" tab settings where it'll show all programs that connect online through it, making sure it's allowing ICQ. ZA also has to have every PCs IP address added to each PC so that they're allowed accces as well.

To my knowledge, there's no additional settings through SMCs firewall that should stop you from using an online program like ICQ.

If nothing else, try calling their 24/7 tech support # but you'll be on hold for a long time so try to be patient.

Yes, I'm using the internal built-in router firewall but that's all. I don't have any other firewalls installed on my system.

As for calling the SMC technical support, I did it god knows how many times... I even e-mailed them. They keep telling me that in order to receive ICQ files I have to configure the ICQ program and open up some ports and apply some triggers in the SMC Router setup. The problem is, they keep telling me on how to do it for ICQ98 version, not the latest one. They told me there's no difference. I tried it and it didn't work so there must be a difference.
