Question about upgrading slot 1 mobo.

She has a Slot 1 mobo that can support processors up to 633 MHz (according to the manual). It currently has a celeron 366 in it.

So... can I buy a slotket and a celeron 633 to upgrade it? This would be cheap and easy to do, with minimal fuss and down time. I really want to get win2k on her machine, and the processor speed is the only thing limiting the upgrade. She mostly does office stuff, and 98 is craptacular (reboots, crashes, etc - standard 98 baggage). It has plenty of RAM for 2k (256), she just needs a better processor.

Thanks.

you can probably find a p3 600 katmai for less than a celery and a slocket - that's what my wife is running now and it has plenty of horsepower for what she needs (and to run folding, hehe)

Katmai's are 66 MHz fsb, right? her manual says it supports 100 MHz, but it is an LX, which seems odd.

thanks again

My kids have a slot one P3 600e it runs on a 100Mhz FSB . I would go with something like that and skip the Celly and slocket.

I can get a cellery 633 w/ slotket and cooler for $75 shipped, which isn't too bad. Price is much more of a consideration than performance.

I also don't think her mobo can do 100 MHz fsb stable, as it is a 440LX. I will try it out at 100 MHz and see first, but I am not holding my breath. Voltage is also a consideration, I am not sure if the katmai uses a different voltage than the Celeron 366. Anyone know?
