Help me o/c P!!! 550

Hi all,

I am having trouble overclocking my P!!! 550. I have used this cpu on MSI 6163PRO and o/c it to 632 MHz rock stable. But the same cpu is not stable even at 616MHz at P2BF.

Configuration of both of my computers are different.

My P2B-F System:
Stable at 605MHz / 2.0 V
Latest Bios flashed
7200 Matrox HD
Voodoo3 3k AGP
A3d 2.0 card
USR 56k modem
PC133 192MB RAM

MSI 6163 PRO System:
Stable at 634MHz/ 2.0 V
5200 Seagate HD
Voodoo Banshee
SB64
Rockwell 56k modem
PC133 128MB RAM

I'm using Alpha 3125 heatsink on it. I also have removed the back plate of P!!! but still didn't help. I use Artic Silver II as a paste. My AGP Frequency is set to 2/3. I have tested all my RAM, and they're stable till 133MHz.

put paste under the green heatsink o nthe bx chip or put some active cooling on it. also the clock multiplier on my p3bf would always get hot. turn the system o nand let it run a bit. then feel around the different chips on the board and see if any are rather hot to the touch. put a heatsink on them also.

Becides making it run more stable at higher busses it looks neet.

Sorry, FMZ........a little inside joke between Nexus and I. Have to ask tho, if it was running that good on the MSi mobo, why'd ya switch?

Good question VidmanII, I sold my MSI system. I used to run Celery 366 on P2BF and P3-550 on MSI. I switched the CPU's around when I sold it.

Isn't clock multiplier bunch of jumper switches? P2B-F is not a jumperless mobo.

it should be the chip Above the ide slots according to the picture. have you tried thermal paste under the greenie and then active cooling on it? that is usually the first thing to give probs.

I haven't tried applying thermal paste on the bx chipset. I m a bit scared that if i take it off, i won't be able to put it back together. Which ide slots are you talking about nexus_7? Are you talking about the IDE connector? I have touched the greenie and it's not warm at all. The chip above BUS Frequency jumpers is a bit warm. Intel PIIX4E PCIset is cool though. I have a Card Cooler XT installed in my case, with one 80 MM case fan intake, one PCI exhaust, and PS exhaust. You can't put a heatsink on the chip i m talking about. It's a relativly small chip. I also have Vantec HD cooler installed.

2.0V? Thats a katami core rite? Didn't that core top out at 600mhz (fastest officially released by intel)?

yea that is the chip i was talking about. tou would have 2 use a smaller older ram sink. try compound under the greenie though that should really help.

yea 600 was the latest maby a few 650's made it out. doesnt matter though if his was higher b4 it should do it again.

Yes RichieZZZ....it's a Katami core, and it actually did top oout at 600Mhz, but I was running it fine 634Mhz.

Is there any diff in the psu between the two ?? If your psu is kinda iffy, the 7200 rpm drive may
be playing with the juice yer feeding to the proc.

those msi boards rule! i just put a 600 katmai in one and it went to 642 with no issues - wouldn't do a thing in a matsonic/via mobo

you just may be topped out on that chip in that mobo - the 6163's run p3 flippers just fine in a msi slotket - you may just want to sell your cpu, get a 600-700e and a slotket instead - my other 6163 has a 800e rock solid at 942 and my 600e was solid at 800- you should be able to pull 133 fsb with any cbo/cco p3 under 700 mhz and they are real cheap right now

I did what you guys told me....i did put some Artic Silver II paste under the greenie, but it didn't help. Oh well, I guess I'll sell the damned CPU, and get a Coppermine

Don't the katmais also have a 512k cache? This makes for some hard overclocking...
