hey guys,

i got a heatsink from coolinnovations from ma freind and i've been tryign it out for their testing and i thougth i mite as well overclock.

i have a 750 mhz socket a thunderbird and an abit kt7 board. My first time overclocking and it failed. I used the pencil trick and connected the L1 bridges pretty sure i ddin't criss cross them as i used a piece of paper to block off the other three bridges as i wuz doin' one. i put in the processor and popped on that heatsink ( its spring load like the swiftech one and mbe i didn't put it flat on or soemthing).. but dat wuzan't the case. when i booted up the thing won't let me boot.. it said CPU unreadable. damaged or whatever.. and when i chcked the temperature.. in the bios i wuz goin' 4 degrees Celsius / sec. goin up.. so i thought i shorted something ... scared the shit out of me.

I turnd it off pulled the hsf.. cleaned the mess i made on the processor with rubbing alcohol. and popped it back in.. using the original stock fan.. and then.. to ma luck it wuz ok. and booted up properly

but the thing wuz.. i cuodn't changet he multiplier even if i connected the bridges like dat.. wuz there osmethuign idid wrong?. or any specifics to as the procedure of conencting the bridges.. (type of lead to buy, graphite?)

.. hrm.. i got a good cooler just coudn't put it to good use.

:p

i could never get the pencil to work - some kinds of graphite are better than others - if you go over to anands and search the articles on tbird/duron there are a couple of articles with lots of pictures - all you relaly have to do it pencil in the l1 bridges where they have been laser cut

i ended up using rear window defroster paint which is about
$7 at auto supply store - just a pinhead drop between the pridges does the trick

after you get the cpu unlocked, you should be able to change the multiplier in the bios - i have a 650 tbird@800 which is all she'll do. try overclocking alittle bit at a time and watch the heat - if it looks like you're overheating then swap the other fan in - i think probably that you got too much graphite on the chip the first time because a heatsing shouldn't cause any kind of message like tha t- but remember athlon + no hs + 60 secnds = keychain!

good luck and welcome!

Actually John I have heard it can be as short a period as 9 seconds to kill your proc.

chuckle. Some guy at apex posted about his 1Ghz amd cpu and mobo having problems. It worked at first now it just beeps. It turns out he installed cpu without heatsink. http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthrea ... adid=22431

There are various methods to unlock amd durons and tbirds. The pencil trick is the most easy to do but doesn't seen to be as sure fire or permanent a solution.
EvilHorace for example used a rear window defroster kit and a thread needle to unlock his 1 ghz T-bird to run at 1200mhz.
