XP2200+ Temperature

I have an XP2200+ on an Epox 6K3A+ and the bios shows 55ºC and so does MBM5. I have a Cooler Master HeatPipe HSF on it and I super glued a Compunurse probe in the center under the hold down clip. It reads 32ºC. I sent an email to Epox tech support today and to my surprise I got an answer a few hours later.

My email to Epox:

CPU temperature is showing 55ºC in the bios. I can touch the side of the
heatsink and it is slightly warm. Is there a problem with the
temperature sensor on the 8K3A+ Rev. 1.2 board ? The Heatsink shows 34ºC
using an infra red thermometer. This system is not overclocked.

Their response:

Dear User,
Actually since the board support the internal on die thermal AMD sensor
on the processor, therefore your processor temperature could be
detecting 10 to 20 degree hotter than the normal external temperature
sensor.

I think I'll rely on the Compunurse for now. When I touch the heatsink, it is barely warm.

That is interesting, I just ordered a dual digital temp sensor just to find out how hot or cool my CPU really was running compared to what MBM showed. I'll post my results when I get it and have it installed.

The newer board coming out are reading the thermistor on the XP's... No board until the KT333's came out did this... Its gettin' the actual core temp... But i still don't believe a default CPU could have a 55C temp...... I put a temp probe under my HSF as close to the core as i could get it. I've also got an 8K3A+. My 1700+ overclocked to 1.83 Gig 2.0v's was reading 135-150F temps... this was bios and MBM... room temp of 85... Now mind you this is with the DR Thermal EXTREME that i did the review on. The review was on the same board but using a 1.33 Tbird... Now u know what temps i got with that and to have temps like this i found it really hard to believe. HSF is warm to the touch but i know what 150F feels like and there's no way its even close to that. The temp probe read 41C don't know what that is in farenheit but i know its no where close to 150F...

Nascar, similar results here with the Asus A7V333. With a 1700 XP I got low 40's on my old Epox 8K7A. The switch to the Asus resulted in 52 to 54C. Temps haven't changed, just more accurate. Reading what's inside the core, basically. Something we just have to get used to.

Also, I believe that the "barely warm" heatsink, just means it's doing it's job. The fan is cooling it off admirably and it's shedding heat like it's suposed to.

OK my temp monitoring set up got here today. I got one of these http://shop.store.yahoo.com/ocsystem/therhariiiha.html So I hooked it all up and mounted the probe underneath the CPU hooked right to the core. Seems MBM read cooler than the actual temp on my Dragon+. When MBM5 is reading 36c the temp probe is reading 41c. Actually this is what I expected but now I have to get used to seeing higher temps than I am used to. By the way these temp are with SETI running.

That looks cool. I installed WPCrest and WPCredit, set the registers and now It runs at 49ºC during the day when it is hot out. (34ºC on the Compunurse). At night it drops to the mid 30s.

Well, I don't know about you, but MBM is reading my CPU temp at 90C idle, 92 or so load.
And, yes, that is 92 DEGREES CELCIUS with no compensation.
Suffice it to say, I don't trust the on-board diode.
