So this is the re-incarnation of the classic boom-box?

Have you heard it? I wouldn't buy anything sound related w/o hearing it first. At that price, it should have a sub but doesn't appear to and many modern day ipod type boomboxes sound lethargic (fail to properly replicate the music well).

Never heard or heard of it. Not every name brand item wows me, I'll use Bose as another name reference.

and "Beats Audio"......??? Don't see that listed on the products page above, nor ANY reviews on that product listed there. So, like I merely mentioned, personally for $200, I'd want to hear it first. I have an awesome PC speaker w sub combo that I plug an ipod into, only cost me about $80. I use it on my outdoor porch and it has so much bass that my wife often comes out to tell me to turn it down.

It's basically smoke and mirrors much like monster cable. If I see a product with Beats in it I will not buy it.

Beats audio is more marketing hype than science. That article is excellent and explains it perfectly: if you want to hear music the way Dr. Dre likes it, then buy a Beats headphone. Me personally, for the same money, I'd rather buy a good pair of Sony studio monitor headphones.

The fact is that most people listen to music completely differently. Having been a sound engineer for 15 years, I tend to like a flatter sound than most people, and I despise hearing distortion. However I grew up listening to a lot of my music on cassette tapes that were used and worn and of dubious quality, and I loved it. Before that people were perfectly happy with warbling 8-track. Before that people were perfectly happy with AM radio.

Today your average individual can't hear the difference between a 128Kbit MP3 and a CD. Most of us listen on iPods, and if you turn on the iPod's equalizer you aren't doing anything good to the audio. I leave my iPod EQ off and then usually touch up the base a bit on my car radio.

ANYWAY I like the final paragraph in that article:
Author's Note

I have to admit to being amused by audio consumers' obsession with hearing a song that sounds exactly as the artist intended it. When I was a high school sophomore in the early 1970s, my introduction to rock was listening to a vinyl copy of the Rolling Stones' 1969 live record "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!" that one of my classmates surreptitiously played on the cheap turntable-in-a-suitcase unit in the audiovisual lab, instead of the French vocabulary records we were supposed to be studying. The sound that came through my headphones was mono, not stereo, and the pops and hisses from the badly worn phonograph needle probably made the Stones' live version of "Live With Me" sound even raunchier than if I had been in the front row of their concert. It sounded terrible, and I absolutely was enthralled by it. If some manufacturer can come up with a gadget that could bring back the feeling of that moment again, I'd pay just about any price for it.

I did live sound (PA) work from age 14 to 20 and the guy that taught me about audio I would allow to master albums. Most junk theses days is just that.

As FP said most people can't tell the difference. I too hate distortion unless it was intended (guitar or dirty vocals) but can't stand it when it results from crappy LOUD mastering (IE RHCP, Metallica to name a few).

I still to this day love my SACD of Dark side of the moon. Probably one of the best things you can own.

FP -for the house I have Klipsch speakers attached to a sony STR-DR710 receiver. my main reason for this unit is to use on my pontoon boat this summer. with the wifes Ipad or my cell phone via bluetooth.

Should be good for that but I'd be leery of taking an ipad on a boat unless there's a place where it can be safe/dry in the event of rain, etc.

For electronics + water sports get a dry box made by pelican. It's what divers use to stash their phones, watches, etc. on the boat while they are diving.
