Yupper.. Sounds about right for that year getting all the BEST wasn't cheap.

Not knowing how to build comps back in 99, I custom ordered a PC from somplace in Califoria to my specs, A P3 -450 Asus mobo and Plenty of ram (I can't remember how much ram or what vid card was!) and that addtronix case you see in the video, but a four bay. (still useing that case today)
The thing cost 2 grand and was NOT the lastest and greatest but wow that thing rocked!! Decieded that the only bottle neck then was my crappy monitor, Bought a Sony 19" trinitron for $800 and some sound works. So yeah I had about $ 3,000+ into that! I was top dog amost friends for a while.
Still have the Addtronix case running my NF7 setup current, and the Sony 19" (in the other room) but everything else is givin away as outdated. Unreal..

That is why I hate buying new hardware. Most of my hardware purchases are for used items like video cards that lose value the day you buy them.

Don't feel too bad about your purchase Mouse. Back in 1986, I bought a pc for $2500. It was an IBM clone running at 8MHz with 640k of ram and no hard drive. It came with a CGA monitor that was only 13 inches. I then added a 10 meg hard drive. Don't even remember how much that sucker costs.

jesus 4500 bucks without the monitor?! thats just too much!

comparing todays systems that will soon need 2GB of RAM to run vista, i did have to laugh when she said...
128 SDRAM, incredibly greedy, 64MB will be all you will ever need.

on a serious note though why does the case have places for 5 fans? i thought you just needed HS those days.

How about 2 grand for a Gateway 486dx33 with 2mb of ram and a 20mb hard drive in early 1992.

I did get to play Aces of the Pacific and Aces of the Deep on it!

I remember paying 150 for for 24k modem upgrade!!!

I cant remember exactly what model my boss has (still works) but back in the day it was about 18,000 and was one of the first PCs ( if you can call it that) on the market. It was an IBM that much i remember.

Sweet Jebus!

128 MEGS of RAM!!!!

Seriously though, computers and gadgets in general have been the very bane of my existence. Since I have been able to afford geek gear I have been buying it, and even when I can't afford it, that's what credit cards are for right?

I remember when I got a GM card with a 2000 limit, I had a Commodore 128 (those were gaming days weren't they, games had to have substance, not just looks) and didn't know much about PCs so I went to a pawn shop and paid way too much for a huge tower POS with a 1 meg video card and some other crap.

I dug myself out of debt a couple of years ago and have become financially secure but still wonder how much better off I'd be if I had never gone down that road. Oh well, no use crying over spilt milk but damn, I've spilt a lot of milk. And the bottom line, no matter how cool it is, like that 800MHZ intel celeron laptop I bought in 99 for 2200.00, it will always be yesterdays piece of crap, sometimes before the day is over.

Holy crap good old techtv. I probably watched that episode live, it sure seemed familiar. I think it was summer of 98 when I built my first computer. Maybe that episode is what sent me on the road to buying asus motherboards. I only own one motherboard that isn't an asus.

My first computer was much like that. Asus p2b with a 440bx, p-2 300mhz, 64 megs of ram, and a diamond firegl something or other with a permedia2 chipset. I don't remember what this cost because my dad payed for most of it. The permedia2 even ran quake3 with settings turned down. That was a great computer.
