I figured it out. Kept everybody in the hall you came out of. Easy pickings after that.

OK, FOR THE BENEFIT OF ANYONE ELSE PLAYING HALO FOR THE FIRST TIME:

The monitor level isn't all that hard (at least so far). Just overwelms you at first if you give in to the natural urge to run after the Monitor. DON'T!

Move forward slowly until you hear or see baddies hear them first usually), then go back. The farther you move forward, the more baddies come out of hiding. Move forward only enough to trigger a few, then haul ass back and get up against a wall so they can't get behind you.

Use the assualt rifle on the head crabs, use the shotty or anything else on the big guys (there will be baddies dropping a LOT of weapons including the shotty and the occasional RPG). Use nades on large groups and stay the hell away from the fat waddlers - they explode when you shoot them.

There's lots of checkpoints.

Don't worry about the Monitor - he will wait for you at the next major checkpoint and the map is completely linear so you can't lose him.

My retail CD just showed up. Once I finish the solo game I'm going to get into multiplayer.

It's not a good idea to restore to a saved game from the beta. There might be subtle differences and you might "break" the game.

The game does unfold a little differently in the final as opposed to the beta.

well, I had my saved game up until finding the silent cartographer and I've played a few levels past that and haven't run into any problems yet at all
And would it matter how the game unfolds further from a save game? it is only saved up until that point...not having anything to do with the new data...
so whatever may come from then on would be saved into a new saved game... am I correct?

I'll let youknow if anything goes bad :)

Depends how the game is programmed and how old the beta is. If there's something required in the saved game file in order to trigger some scripted event later on, for instance, and that trigger is missing, you might be stuck.

Halo doesn't have anything nearly that complex, it's just a ported console game. Heck you don't even always keep the same weapons between levels. I've heard of numerous people who kept the save games from the beta with zero problems...

Well I'm getting close to the end and it's been enjoyable. Definately been some "hairs standing on the back of the head" moments like HL. My only complaint is the repetative maps. The monitor level was VERY monotonous, and it's only the damaged hallways that keeps the 2nd visit through the enemy battleship interesting, although the detour through the pools of leaking coolant were fun.

I do love the physics - I still get a kick out of a well tossed grenade. ANd it's fun to watch them howl when you stick a plasma grenade on to one of them - before they blow up :)

Looking forward to trying out multiplayer.

BASTARDS!!!!

I was enjoying the game just fine until the friggin' car race game at the end.

Okay, so admit the demolition derby is fun, but it SUCKS that it doesn't checkpoint you anywhere during the run. I've tried it 3 times already.

BASTARDS!
