i just noticed that win2k is different from 98/me - trying to play aoe on two networked 2k machines and they would hook up in multip[layer - 98/me gives you a choice between lan or internet - 2k gives you a choice of serial/modem/tcp-ip - i used the tcp ip and put in the identity of my server 192.168 etc, no go, then i tried entereing the name that showed up when i accessed it remotely from the kids computer dadxxxxxxx etc. no go -
something simple that i'm missing here - do i have to enable/permission the kids computer, etc. to play with my mine? - i'm dual booting both so it's no biggie - i'm just getting used to win2k - must more stable - faster for us dial up folk too, it seems
thanks

What game, specifically?
Win2K networking is a LOT more complicated.
However it is essentially the same. For gaming, no, you don't need to set any permissions that's only for file sharing.
Make sure both computers have TCP/IP installed and that you manually set each computer's IP address (right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select properties). Use the same 1st 3 numbers, change the last number (make one say 192.168.0.19 and the other 192.168.0.20). Set both to use submask 255.255.255.0
For TCP/IP that's really all you need to do.
If this is a Quake-engine game just run the server and have the other machine just browse for LAN servers. It should appear on the list.
If it's a game that you need to specify the IP address, use the IP address of the computer running the server.
Hope this helps...
