So far, from what I'm seeing in FEAR, I like it too. I need to retire and get single again so I'd have more time for games
......Update: after playing more of FEAR, I agree with the Executioner. It doesn't come close to Q4 which IMO is a far superior game.
I'm still playing FEAR but its boring in comparison, too much of walking through halls, etc with NO action, then an occasional supernatural visitor and an occasional brush with a few bad guys. It's lacking variety, action and unique scenery.
Q4, what I've seen of it, can be pretty dark. You definately need to use the flashlight all the time, which as in Doom3 is annoying since some weapons don't have a flashlight.
Fear can be dark at times, but it's not abused like it is in Doom3. Your firefights are almost always in well lit areas. I really can't remember ever having to shoot it out in the dark so far. However you DO walk through some pretty damn dark spooky areas, and the effect is VERY well done - not the cheap cop-out in Doom3. The hairs stand up on the back of my head when I get into dark areas. Rarely does anything happen in there, but man it's spooky. The sound effects are Hollywood grade.
I've gotten to the 4th map in Fear now and I must say it's aweful fun. I haven't been genuinely frightened this much in a long time. It's very reminicent of the fun I had playing the original Half Life the first time.
The AI is excellent. I've been in some pretty damn difficult situations. However, just like in Half-Life, some thinking and approaching the problem from a different angle usually helps. I've gotten so that I replay the same shootout several times to try to take out the bad guys more efficiently. Hmm, maybe this time I can take out half of them with a well-placed suprise 'nade and jump down into the remaining ones using slo-mo delivering a few well placed kicks.
The shotgun is hands down my favorite weapon, although it's also a lot of fun impailing people with the nail gun. I strive for one good shot to the head so they hang there off the wall dangling by the head. The remote grenades are also a lot of fun.

I wouldn't go as far as all the time, but for the most part its dark. I don't know what else you would expect from being inside a building with no windows when the power goes out. The outside levels in Q4 are plenty bright and all the enemies produce light of their own. You can see things even if you don't use a flashlight.
I do think the AI in Q4 sucks though all the monsters are so predictable.
!!!POSSIBLE Q4 SPOILER!!!!!!
There are these ones that will dodge things regularly but right before you get to them you get an upgrade so your gun tracks stuff. I don't know how much more blindingly obvious they could have made the hint to use your tracking ability to hit these things.
i agree about the AI in Q4 its the same as Quake 2 lol, the bad guys simple run towards you ive seen mabye 3 guys jump to one side or side step behind a piller but they where slow in doing so. i bought it the other day played about 2 hours.
P.S
i bought the Special Edition wich includes a making of Quake 4 and a copy of Quake 2 with expansion packs(Ground Zero and The Reckoning) got it in a deal at game was £44.99 now £24.99 =)
I rarely used the flashlight in Q4 but I also played it at night with no room lights on. I'm actually finding the need for a flashlight more often in FEAR than I did in Q4. I'm not finding the AI better in FEAR either, also predictable IMO but they're just games so how great can it be ?
I finished FEAR a few days ago, and it does get harder at Interval 9 and 10. My fav weapon in FEAR is the Raygun. I think in Interval 9, there are 2 times were all your weapons are taken away, and you're left with just a pistol. In this part if you are playing in a dark room, it will scare the crap out of you. I don't want to spoil it any more that what I've said.
well finished playing Quake 4 today i can say i was a bit dissapointed to much of the same i think, open door walk in strogg walks around from piller you shoot he dies.
not wanting to spoil it but the second last and last boss are the EASIEST bosses ive ever had to fight in a game. the last boss literly just stand on the second floor bit back from the edge none of the enemies even bother comming to kill you i literly just stood there, same with the second last boss except you need to dodge the dark matter gun blasts.....geez i kind of feel cheated AI should be alot better!
I have FEAR and don't really like Quake. The online gaming is ridiculous cause ur not setup against players at your level so you could end up against players who can kill u in like 5 seconds. Unlucky for the noobs!! lol!
My computer can handle any game, it has 3.2 ghz 250 hard disk space a 6200 nvidia card and other cool extras anmd got it for only £600 pounds woo hoo!!
