truly a great man

Post by TheSovereign »

Tid Bit:
In June 2004 the e-mailed excerpt from the July 2003 Associated Press article circulated anew on the Internet, this time prefaced as follows:
This is the way he is, and he has been re-elected several times ... Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!!:

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

You have to love this guy!!

More on the AZ Sheriff.

Do you know why he get's away with such things?!?!? He doesn't take any state money. Sooooo the state can't come in and try to run things or have some influence.

Sheriff Joe is on the right track n my eyes. And the reason he "gets away with such things" is because the people there (not the inmates) like what they see

Sorry, I didn't mean it to sound "bad". Your right we need more guys like this. People HAVE to remember, these ARE prisoners!! They needed to be treated like one's. I think people are forgetting that with the prison photo's from Iraq. Those guys were in prison for a reason. F them if they have to suffer a little humiliation. At least they are not raping, pillaging and plundering anymore.

There was a guy like that in one of these counties in NC. I think It may be more towards Blades area. Sheriff Hage. He had a black patrol car with a big red black widow on the hood painted in red. Painted the jail cells all pink. He used to be on some TV show talking to his inmates but something happened and he was fired.

Hege. Yep ©LINT, he's legend around here. I remember he'd have a sign right off highway 85 south saying something like "prepare to stop for search". Then there was an exit, no other way to turn around. So those carring drugs would always pull off at that exit, then hege's guys would nab them. He caught many carrying lot's of drugs that way. Never was an actual stop and search on 85. :d

Then one big druggie from florida, whom was caught, hired bigtime lawyers. Something like illegal setup was brought up, so his very successful tactic was stopped.

He did all kind of things. You'd see inmates dressed in pink stripes picking up trash along the highway. He used rough, but very effective tactics. I thought he was still around though, but I haven't kept track.

ah, here we go . Pic of the stripped car is there.
Since his promotion to interim sheriff just eight days ago, Hedrick has announced a long list of changes at the department. Hege's beloved "spider car" has been stripped of its decals and now sits in the county garage. Hedrick said he believes Hege removed the deals prior to last week, but the engine components of the car's nitrous oxide system appear to remain intact.

Also vanishing are traces of Hege's mascot of sorts, the spider. Spider emblems have been removed from county motorcycles and vehicles, and Hedrick has rolled up the spider-bearing floor mats that once guarded the entrances to the office. The changes are all part of an effort to give the department a more professional, approachable and positive feel, Hedrick said.

"The spider emblem is negative," he said. "I think we've created a negative image here and we had to step away from it altogether ... the uniforms, the tinted windows, it's all been negative."

Deputies also plan to conduct fewer roadblocks, Hedrick said. The department's TAC Highway Drug Interdiction Team continues to patrol Interstate 85, but perhaps to a lesser extent.

You don't want to be speeding in that section. They will get you, usually. Seems everytime I drive by that part, 1-2 cars are pulled over and being searched, people either against their car, or on the grass. So they still haven't changed that part.

Do a google search on sheriff hege's car, many many results. Found this

LEXINGTON, N.C. -- Davidson County Sheriff Gerald Hege's idea of a perfect evening is chasing criminals while George Thorogood's ``Bad to the Bone'' cranks up on the stereo of his spider car.

``If you're a bad guy, I'm definitely dangerous,'' he says. ``If you're a good citizen, I'm your security blanket. If you're a whining yuppie, I'm definitely outrageous.''

Here's one thing he's not: ``I'm not a bureaucrat.''

Since Hege took office almost two years ago, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Vietnam veteran has been driving around the county in his black Chevrolet SS Impala with a huge white spider web on the hood, bragging about revving it up to 140 mph

Gerald Hege, 47, grew up wanting to be sheriff. He comes in at 8 a.m., does office work until about 5 p.m., when he picks up his wife, Geri, for supper. Then, he returns to work until midnight alongside his officers, patrolling dark country roads and roaring Interstate 85 with an MP5 submachine gun beside him on his front seat. He does this seven days a week. While most other sheriffs wear suits and ties, he wears a uniform - even to church. For all this, he gets paid $63,500 a year.

Much much more. He's one interesting person. Found another, has a pic of him too and about his story:
http://misery.blogs.com/misery/2004/05/ ... oughe.html
Gerald Hege, self-proclaimed "Toughest Sheriff in America" has relinquished his badge under a 15 count felony indictment, after pleading to two counts to avoid jail time.

While Sheriff of Davidson County, North Carolina, Hege had painted the walls of the jail pink, and decorated them with pictures of crying teddy bears to humiliate the prisoners. He'd instructed his officers to wear an all black, paramilitary uniform instead of the standard police gear. Hege's personal office was decorated with military netting and camouflage, adorned with hand grenades and various artillery.
