When I worked at General Dynamics in 1984, I belonged to a union, which after 3 months, lead me to quit to a non-union shop. To give you one example:
There was an assembler who's job it was to tighten bolts that were used on the Phalanx system missile defense used on Navy ships. This guy screwed up so much, that management fired him, but he was back to work 3 days later courtesy of the union. One decision affected me: a manager in the Machine Shop wanted to hire me to perform surface plate measurements due to my experience with measurement tools, but he could not hire me and had to hire a person that was with the union for 15 years instead, with zero experience. That is when I decided it was time to bail.
