If you're satisfied with Sprint's coverage and speeds, then look into Ting.com:
https://ting.com/
Very reasonable rates. No contract (but it's not a pre-paid service). You only pay for what you use. They use Sprint's network, and you can port any Sprint phone over to them.
However, it's not cost effective if you're a heavy data user.

As for the major ones, depends on your needs and coverage areas. I had US Cell. for years and the coverage was great everywhere but one place that I really wanted a smart phone to work, our cabin. Only AT&T works there so I switched because of that.
The smaller companies probably won't have good coverage's in more rural areas and/or service could suck.
With any of them, they'll all have reviews available online via search.

and seeing there no free phones
There never were free phones. You paid for those phones and then some in higher rates over the 2 year plan. People need to understand that.
The new system is much better. You just finance your phone unless you can afford it outright. The old way was a rip off.

I have 4 phones on my plan using Verizon, and I pay a whopping $200/m, but I have very good coverage everywhere we go. Even here were I live now in Woodland, CA, I'm still using Verizon even though AT&T is here. Even my company gave me a Verizon Jetpack to receive wifi on the train.

I was using a local MVNO off of Sprint called Cleartalk, that let me port my old Verizon phone over when VZW tried to screw me over. But the coverage sucked so now I'm with Boost. Got a really good deal on phones when I switched, and I actually have data service everywhere I go. It's amazing.
