MetaWatch Frame

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Okay, this is the first "smart" watch I've seen that I actually like the looks of and looks practical. It's got a standard watch band (you can replace the band with at any jewelry shop), and they didn't even bother with trying to put a camera in it which I always felt was a moronic idea in a watch.

It uses induction charging, although you do have to attach a clip to it. When the HELL are we going to have easy and universally compatible inductive charging for ALL our devices? I want to be able to toss my phone, BT headset and all my other gear on a charging mat at the end of the day and forget about it. It's the 21st century. Why are we still plugging things in (and leaving a nice hole for moisture to enter)?

BTW I think there's a fashion conspiracy. Have you noticed EVERYONE (even women) are wearing HUGE watches lately? It's the latest style. I think the consumer electronics companies are getting us used to the idea of big watches so that the coming smart watches won't look so ungainly.

Nice find. I would actually wear this. However, I'd like to see it around $150 rather than $200.

I'm with you on induction charging. It would be much easier to sit my phone down on the charger when I get home rather than remember to plug it in.

You nailed the very reason I can't bring myself to get one yet. I don't want to plug yet another thing in.

The watches are getting bigger because people with enough money to buy them are losing their close up eyesight. They'll have to pry my old fashioned analog Timex off my wrist.

most of my watches are in the 40-42mm size range. 45-50mm gets crazy.

I'm wondering if because that MetaWatch just uses a simple B&W LCD display, that it doesn't use much power.

I have a couple of dress watches: a Citizens Eco-Drive that recharges from the sun (I just leave it on the window sill) and an auto-winder. I refuse to have battery powered analog watches anymore - the batteries never last more than a year.

My every-day watch is (and has been for 25 years) this Casio G-Shock "Classic". It has a guaranteed 5 year battery (and they've always lasted 5 years). I replace the whole watch every 5 or 6 years. Casio has been making the same watch model for 25 years. It's rugged and reliable and the display is easy to read.

The battery usually lasts 6 or 7 years and often outlasts the watch band. When I buy a new one, I relegate the old one to wear when working on the property where it might get scratched up.
