I still use a Garmin - my s3 has it . but still like the screen on my garmin better !

My Android phone is has WAY better navigation with Google Maps than my TomTom GPS ever had.

I don't mind the screen. Works better in portrait mode. You can see more of what's coming. The Google Navigation is well designed for portrait. Don't try to use it in landscape.

I would also recommend installing an off-line GPS app in case you end up somewhere with a bad data connection:

I still like my Garmin in the car because that's all it does. If the phone rings, I stop for a while, etc, it's still doing what I want it to. I also like the fact that adding waypoints is easy and that it lets me know what time I'll reach my destination. I don't have unlimited data so that could be a problem on a long trip. Google Maps and many other Nav Apps rely on having a good cell signal too.

When I was at our cabin a few weeks ago, I tryed a variety of Nav apps that were suppose to work offline, one also being the one above: GPS Navigation & Maps +offline.

Unlike my sons phone that's the same as mine but with AT&T service (that works there), my US Cellular service barely works there (receive texts, emails slowly but no internet). None of those Apps worked there offline. I'd get a message " no service available" and that was that.
I now have a Nav App called Sygic that is suppose to work with a GPS signal only. I'll know next May. It's also not free.
