SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - When the sun shines, mobile phone users frequently seek out shade to see their display. Samsung Electronics Co. wants to help solve that problem.

The leading maker of displays said Wednesday it has developed a device to sense the brightness of ambient light and adjust the image so viewers can see what's being shown more easily while outdoors. When indoors, the sensor dims the display's backlight to save power.

Samsung, which expects growth in mobile displays from the proliferation of mobile phones, digital music players and other portable electronics, said it would begin mass production of the technology by the end of the year.

Ok, I didn't know the iPhone did that, is it automatic, or do I have to turn on a setting? or is it an app?

Higher end car stereos have done this for years. I guess that was about time with all these fancy phones coming out now.

Hmmm, if an Iphone does that, my (now 2) Ipod Touches must also do that. Can't say I've even looked at it outside on a sunny day so far.

Every aftermarket car stereo head unit I've had for the last 15 yrs does that.

Hell, when I was growing up my dad had an old tv with one knob for uhf, and one for vhf that had an optical sensor on it for dimming the screen. I would play with it all the time covering it up and watching the screen darken.

This not new technology, or even a new idea, its just late in being applied to phone displays.
