Are all laptop DVD drives the same?

Meaning the same rear connection? Or do some brands like compaq or Dell use their own different connections.

Below on the left is a Dell cd rom drive while on the right is a compaq DVD drive, obviously using a different rear connection and it's also thinner so it doesn't fit inside a dell laptop securely.

Or is it just compaq/Dell that uses their own propriety connection? Would all Dell drives fit all dell laptops?

thanks

*edit

Found out the dell(teac) uses an adapter. Removed the adapter and there is the same connection as the compaq cd rom. Plugged it in and it worked, but since it isn't in the dell casing it's not fitting securely. But, the front cover is too wide on the compaq, I assume those can be changed too. trying... :d

Not really. Just been working on a few recently. Kinda learning as I go along. :d

Found out the compaq drive will fit in the Dell (teac) cdrom bay using the dell casing. But it is no perfect fit. Had to remove the front bezel and it works ok, Just have to trim some on the bezel and then it should be hunky dory. :)

Unlike hard drives, every manufacturer uses a proprietary interface.

And I think they've different between models as well.
