Video Camera Suggestions

I don’t know weather this is the right forum, but here it goes

Ok, so I've finally decided to buy a video camera, so I've done some research on the different types of digital cams out there, now I need some suggestions on the different types.
I am not looking for some chinsy tiny camera that is so small that it can hardly fit in your I am looking for something more professional, something that I can put on a tripod or track.
Something in the $600 - $800 range
I am planning on making a couple of home made “movies” with this camera and my lovely new video editing software.

So far this is what I think:

Not a SD or other card based camera: poor quality
Not a hard drive based camera; to expensive for me
Maybe a DVD based camera, but I have doubts about cost of media, and ease of use.
Maybe a mini DV camera.
Or maybe I am going completely the wrong way and I should go analog.

Any general suggestions about types of cameras, or specific recommended models would be much appreciated.

Thank you all!

there is nothing wrong with sd, other than it is slower than the onboard memory. Alot of high end cameras use sd cards.

check into a nikon, sony or canon. I think hitachi makes a nice mini dv camera as well.

I have JVC GR-DVL520U MiniDV cam and I love it. It uses an SD card for pictures, but the video goes on the miniDV tapes and I can hook it up directly to my computer for editing. But the other suggestions are good as well. :)
