Can you change the processor in a compaq notebook for a faster one? If the fsb and socket are the same will it work? Didnt want to buy a cpu and not be able to use it. Compaq 1201TA, celeron 766mhz with 100mhz fsb is the factory cpu. Would like to install a celeron 1.3ghz with 100fsb. The only reason I could think of for it not ot work is the bios or the mobo. Is the multiplier locked in the cpu or the mobo? Damn Compaq crap! Dont know much bout Intel, wish it had an AMD!

I wouldn't even consider changing the CPU in a laptop. They are not designed to be upgraded.

There is another issue you forgot about: HEAT. The heat pipe and cooling fan in your laptop is designed to eliminate the heat of the processor that's currently installed, or any other processor it was designed for at that time. Upgrading the CPU will likely generate more heat, and the cooling system may not be able to deal with it.

All laptops tend to run hot to begin with. You're pushing your luck.

Besides, I very much doubt that a laptop designed for a 766Mhz celery would run a 1.3Ghz celery. I doubt that processor was even on the drawing board when that laptop was released. I doubt the mobo or BIOS supports it.

I didnt think it was possible, but thought Id ask. I dont know much bout lappys, but I knew it might run hotter. If it was mine, I would have sold it a long time ago and bought something faster with more mem. Just tryin to help a coworker out.
