Offline GPS Map Options for Android

Been researching an off-line GPS map app for Android. The problem with the built-in Google maps is you are totally dependent on your data connection, and sometimes that connection is not available.

I also want to use my Nexus 7 tablet as a GPS device since it has a GPS sensor, when we travel.

After doing a lot of research I've settled on these two, both of which I believe use the open source map service:

This one is $1 which entitles you to one continental map (I chose the North America). Additional maps cost less than $1 each.

CoPilot GPS:

This is a free one. You get one map free (United States and Canada is what I got). Additional maps are rather pricey. You also have to pay extra for voice turn-by-turn (it's free the first 14 days). Still this is a good backup GPS for free.

Both of these allow you to do partial map downloads to save memory (for instance, just the south east and north east US). The full North American map is 1.3 Gb in the first app, and 2Gb in the 2nd app.

I suspect this will become more & more relevant in the coming years with retired tablets & phones.
