Nvidia GTX 980 and 970

Post by Nuby1Canuby »

Finally there is a higher end video card in the $300 price range.

The GTX 970 is a bit faster then the GTX 780 and R9 290 for an MSRP of $329.
The GTX 980 is a bit faster then the GTX 780 TI for an MSRP of $549.

I'm still rocking an HD5870 that I can run 90% of games at full resolution on. Can't believe I've managed to keep this card for so long without it showing a weakness. It's like the Radeon 9800 for me.

My 6970 is really hurting at 5144x1050 so I'm overdue to upgrade. I'll probably get a GTX 970 when the dual fan cards are closer to $300 in Vancouver.

I run a GTX580 in my main PC. But honestly, my little Dell laptop with a Radeon 8690M runs just about everything I need it to at a 10th of the power usage

Dual 5770s in X-Fire and no issues getting 60+ FPS in WoW on Ultra settings.. And I rarely play anymore, so I've not seen the need for upgrades.. Besides, I'm saving to buy a motorcycle at the end of winter.. :)

The 970 seems to be the sweet spot

Techpowerup has reviews of the GTX 970 at maximum settings in several games and different resolutions: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA ... ler/1.html

It's handy to look up your specific resolution to see if you should be dialing your graphics settings back to maintain a smooth playable experience.

The 970 looks like an absolute steal for the performance. I don't regret buying my EVGA 780 SC but I would've liked paying 970 prices for it.

If you're looking at these make sure to check the length - the gigabyte 970 OC was in stock for about 2 mins at NE and it is 16 inches long.

I'm gonna grab a 970 then. Good deal. Too bad they're all out of stock.
