Need a new GFX card - any tips?

Hi all,

looks like my GFX card just died - so I guess I'll need to shop for a new one.

I had an ASUS EAH 4870 Dark Knight and I'm running an ASUS P7P55D board with an i5@2.67, 12GB RAM.

The card was great, especially since lately I've not been playing so many of the latest games. What I have on my PC (from a couple of years ago) runs pretty much at full detail with this.

So my first thought was to simply purchase the same card again as it must be available at a pretty reduced price by now.

But then I thought I'd ask, maybe there are reasonably priced cards with a better set of features and more performance out there Bb now?

I did like the extra cooling on the card, it's hot here, and a minimum of two monitor outs are essential.

Thanks for any tips :)

Cheers

Chris

That card is 3 generations behind, and doesn't support DX11 so I'd buy a new card versus the same one unless money is tight. All modern cards have a minimum of two outputs and most have three.

Most important question is how much do you want to pay?

That 4870 was probably a $200 - $225 card in it's day. A comparably priced card would be the AMD HD7850 today: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 50&x=0&y=0

The best bang for the bucks right now is the Geforce 660Ti for around $299: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... ti&x=0&y=0

If money is tight, a last gen AMD HD6850 for $130 (with rebate) is going to blow away your old card. That's still a really nice card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... ageSize=20

Many thanks Penguin! I'll go hunting for deals and see if I can get a decently priced 660Ti over here in Europe.

I haven't actually fired up a high end game in a year or so, but I wouldn't mind my system being ready when I do :)

Cheers

I just installed a Geforce 660Ti in my new PC and it's awesome. Even has a 3D mode where you can use 3D glasses but I have to to try that.

Also check out the AMD Radeon HD 7950 boost edition.
It's about the same price as the 660 Ti.
They are both about the same speed at stock settings.
The HD 7950 is faster when overclocked compared to a 660Ti, due to having twice the memory bandwidth and more shaders.

I would recommend the models with dual fans as they are quieter, providing your case has good cooling.
