Modified Video Card Drivers: Good or Bad?

Post by GuardianAsher »

I have a GeForce 6800XT in my main rig. I am currently running NGO Modified Forceware 84.26 drivers. They are basically the original Forceware with some registry tweaks to make them faster. I was wondering if anyone else uses modified drivers for either their NVIDIA or ATI card? And if so, which version do you recommend? I know there are a lot of them, DNA Force, Omega Drivers, just to name a couple.

I really have a reason for asking, and I guess it should go in the Games section, but it has to do with the drivers, I think

When I'm playing Guild Wars: Factions, the load screen goes by super fast, but I've noticed that the game will sometimes begin to show the scenery without fully loading the graphics, such as my character, for example. All of the surroundings will show, but no character models. Then they'll show up about 10 seconds later. Could this have something to do with me using these drivers, or is this totally normal?

i dont really know about Factions, but for me (and my 6800gt) it has always seemed that yeah the modified drivers would run things faster, etc. but overall almost always I have gone back to the WHQL or equivalent drivers, as they seem to not only run just about as fast but also usually dont give me the problems that modified drivers usually seem to give me.

I've avoided modded drivers like the plague for years. The video card manufacturers are going to tweak the drivers for the best performance in each game with the best STABILITY. You risk all kinds of mayhem when you stray. Then you never know if that occasional crash is the driver, the game, a stray cosmic ray particle or what...

Well, I answered my own question about Factions. I uninstalled the modified drivers and installed WHQL Forceware 84.21. Same issue. but now, it seems to lag even more >.>

I used to hate the omega drivers, now I like them. for ATI only though. If you want additional proformance in a certain game try the omega ones, or just stick with oem ones.

Problem with Omega is the guy isn't updating the NVIDIA ones anymore. It's stopped at the 66 series I think.

I'm using Omega ATI drivers and I like them better than the official ones due to the fact I don't have to use the new bloated CCC and can use the old style CC. My games all run fine...

I use the stock ATI drivers WITHOUT the bloated CCC. You can install the drivers without them and just leave the old control panel installed.

I personally find the modified drivers to be a little faster.

I just upgraded to the newest SLI compatiable drivers for my 6800XT's. It was the Version 91.33. Its a beta driver but it was the only one I could find. Are there anymore drivers out there anybody could recommend for my 2 6800XT's?? I didnt even know there were other manufacturers of drivers that could be use. Any recommendations because I dont really like this driver I'm using

Go to http://www.ngohq.com and download their modified ATI Catalyst drivers. Those should help you out, Joey. Good luck!

Whats the difference between the CP and CCC drivers. I've figured out CP means control panel but whats CCC and whats the difference. Also, how would I install the ATI Catalyst 6.8 or 6.7 without losing my Nvidia Control Panel? Thats where I do my overclocking at...which obviously isnt overclocking to what it could be at considering you're at 400 and 800. My "optimal settings", when I let the control panel do the overclocking, is 680 Memory clock frequency and 365 3d clock frequency. Remember though, thats BOTH of my cards overclocked at that speed. I really havent even noticed any improvements in Battlefield 2 though. Maybe I should run benchmarks on before and after and see what it says??
Thanks for any help or feedback from anybody...I can definately use it...

Joey
