Well, I'm going to try to fix the problem first, but the Radeon is starting to tick me off. The driver immaturity and annoying problems has pushed me to the limit to where if I can't get it fixed, I'm going with an nVidia card. Which really sucks cause I love the T.V. IN/OUT and awsome DVD-Playback features of the AIW.

I was looking around and I just want to get your guy's opinions. Is a 64mb card really worth it? I can see how it would help in Quake3 (which I do play often) but most other games don't take advantage of the extra 32mb onboard, do they? Should I bother to shell out the extra $$$?

If you think that 64mb is necessary, what GTS would you recommend? I was looking at a review over at <a href="http://www.gamersdepot.com" Target="_NEW">gamersdepot</a> and the Leadtek WinFast GeForce2 64meg was kicking ass in the benchmarks. It looked like it was going for $250 at pricewatch (approximately the same price as my AIW Radeon) I'm figuring if I'm lucky enough, I could do a straight trade. My AIW Radeon for a GeForce2.

Though, that is if 64mb would really benefit me. (<a href="http://www.runlikehell.homestead.com/ht.html" Target="_NEW">my</a> system - soon to be RAID) If you think a 32mb card is more necessary at this time for games and you think it's more bang for your buck (or whatever) what 32mb card do you recommend? Also, is the DVD-Playback of the GTS cards decent?

I'm not trying to be lazy here and not have to spend time researching a card, I already have researched some; I just want your guy's opinions. This will be my first purchase of an nVidia card (former 3DFX owner before ATI). Thanks guys!

64meg

Post by Piper »

I've got a CLAP2 (32meg) installed on an A7V with a Duron 800@880Mhz and 384meg. This setup gives me 98fps in Q3 @ 1024x768x32 with full detail. If you plan on running higher resolutions the 64meg may come in to play. However, I'm not sure the price difference would be worth the performance. I've never had any problems with the CLAP2 and it's currently running at 225/360.

I don't think its worth spending more cash for the 64 meg version. I also have a CLAP2 running at 225/360. DVD playback on GTS is decent not as good as Radeon but you knew that already.

$159 for the whitebox GeForce 2 GTS (its really a Visiontek) without the fancy name or packaging:

All GeForce 2 GTS videocards use the same reference design and are clocked the same speed {200 Mhz core, 333 Mhz DDR memory}. Why pay more for a fancy name or packaging? I don't even use the outdated drivers on the provided cd-rom and download the latest drivers.

OK????

Check this. I uninstalled netmeeting and now everything works. I was having problems running my games in full-screen and all this jazz, I uninstalled it and now my machine is working perfectly like it was before.

That's just wierd as hell. I don't know what netmeeting had to do with it, but damn. I'm glad its working. Whew....

Thanks guys for your time.

Screw the GeForce, the Radeon rocks ;) :D ;) :D
