AT&T fiber finally in my area

Post by Genom »

Comcast has been pumping my download speed up little by little recently (causing no end of issues having to reconfigure QoS to respond properly), and finally found out why. 1Gb fiber in my area.

So fuck off comcast with your shit upload speeds and terrible customer service. Getting fiber on Tuesday.

Best part is I have been doing a lot of work with the one of the local test labs for AT&T and the guys there got my name on the "knows wtf he is doing" list

Your post reminded me to check my speed without QoS on, which I haven't done in a while, and it looks like Comcast bumped me up from 120Mbit/s to 177. Need to reconfigure my QoS settings for the higher speed.

No gigabit option here... yet. Centurylink DOES have fiber, but it's actually SLOWER than Comcast.

No Comcast available in our area so I've been on AT&T for the last 6 years. Local Cable company (BlueStream) been offering 1G but always heard horror stories. I'm actually trying them out now (along with my AT&T) so I've got both connections going and I'm routing all Usenet traffic through there. I'm only trying the 100Mb service for now which is still faster than my 75Mb from AT&T, for a 1/3 of the price. Nice to have a backup too. I might just downgrade the AT&T and bump up the BlueStream line.

My only gripe with these guys (BlueStream) is that in their terms, there's a 1TB limit per month. Just in 3 days, I had 150GB downloaded.

It is nice to have a backup and automatic fail-over.

Pricing for 1Gb AT&T is cheaper than 150Mb Comcast for me by 30 bucks (after promo pricing thats even cheaper), and it's got a good rep here, so here is hoping.

Biggest deal for me is the upload speed since the gear I work with I reaaaaaly need 100Mb+ upstream to do some of my testing/demos, and scheduling with the California office to get gear online for this is a constant hassle.

First run, after deleting the QoS and Comcast specific bufferbloat fix limiters, and AT&T router in default setup (not bridged, etc)

Welp, gonna have to go over the router. Cant get faster downloads, but the AT&T modem sped test shows it getting the right downloads.

Probably easiest to reset pfsense entirely.

*Edit

Definitely the router. Plugged directly into the modem I cant dso the DSL reposrts test because it shows as faster than 1 gig and need an account, and regular speedtest shows 960 down

I bet it's the pfBlockerNG rules.

This is on fiber from AT&T, but I'm not paying for the highest speed option.

Executioner, they just put in so as a promo it's only 20 bucks more a month from 300Mb to 1Gb, and after the first year it's gonna go up another 20 bucks. Still, 100 bucks a month for 1Gb vs 105 a month with comcast for 1/5th the speed? I'll take it.

EDIT:

After some tweaking I am pretty satisfied:

I could get faster with bad jitter, but no need.
