IPTV vs custom home networks

so after using my new fiber service for a day, i realized i had a few networking issues that needed to be corrected. i've been using my own router behind my cable and dsl modems in the past (loaded with DD-WRT). i also have several devices that need port forwarding rules and firewall exceptions. what happened is i completely forgot about the problems introduced with the new service and the router plugged in front of mine.
since the new fiber service is brought in over ethernet, they put a router in front of mine, resulting in a double-NAT situation (resulting in all port forwarding to fail). no big deal, as this happens with other services...just put the ISP provided router (well, gateway) into bridge mode and keep using my DD-WRT as usual. that works fine for internet, but IPTV requires multicast to work. enabling that on your network will destroy your wireless and probably any performance you ever thought you had.
to fix it, i just moved the port that the IPTV box is connected to to the same vLAN that the WAN port uses. this isolated it from the rest of the network and everything magically works again. i got lucky, as this may not work with every provider and then things get messy real quick or just never work quite right.
now that the IPTV traffic is on my network and going through my router, i can also monitor the bandwidth used. it seems to average around 2-3Mbps for TV.
