Sigh.... Speedtest.com and their inflated download speeds. They measure burst speed (like Comcast Speedboost) which only gives you that speed in bursts for the first half second or so of a download.

Try these two tests if you want to know what your real world sustained speed is, like during a 100Mb file download. On standard residential Comcast that will be 6 - 8Mb/s.

i haven't found those sites to be very accurate either though. i know we've discussed this before. if i do tests from the office, which has a 100Mbps sync up/down managed pipe (guaranteed speed, not burst)...those sites show maybe a quarter of the speed. if i download something from MS or another big boy, i get over 80Mbps sustained.

from home, my 30Mbps/5Mbps tests out accurately and matches what i get for nzb d/l's (~4MB/sec).

edit: i just did the first link again and it gave me 5.5Mb down, 4Mb up. not even close to my real-life speeds. the entire test lasted about 6-8 seconds as well...that doesn't really give a good average. speedtest at least runs for about 30 sec or so and you see it vary a bit before taking the average. not saying it's the end-all be-all of testing, just seems a bit better to me. that or the above sites are just overloaded during the day and can't handle faster connections whenever i test.

I've had my router capped at 6MB/s as an experiment for the past few weeks to avoid buffer bloat, which I discussed here: http://pcabusers.org/forums/showthread. ... ffer+bloat

This essentially defeats Comcast's SpeedBoost and I see no loss in FTP download speeds. I actually see an INCREASE in my download performance now since the router never over fills the buffer. I can have a large download going on at the same time as I'm gaming and not have it impact anyone else's browsing of Netflix streaming.

Sorry, I just don't believe in those inflated numbers.

SpeedBoost doesn't take effect when your broadband speed is twice as fast as SpeedBoost.

[img][IMG]http://www.speedtest.net/result/1907847466.png[/img][/IMG]now lets see what happens after they come and repair the connection unit at the telephone pole in the next 24-48 hours. it keep shorting out .comcast was out earlyer and seen the system fail. they replaced the cable from the pole to the house last month. and they checked all the connections and cables in the house last 2 trips out.
now after comcast repairs !

Work Secondary Connection

Wugnet - Down: 2.73 Mbps, Up: 1.66 Mbps

AuditMyPC - Down: 11.72 Mbps, Up: 4729 kbps

The main connection is cable. The secondary connection is Clearwire. I was seeing speeds bounce all around through all of the tests.

Also, is it sad that my personal net connection is faster than the one we have at work? At a computer repair place?
