IPv6 block assignment fun

Post by FlyingPenguin »

If you're curious how IPv6 blocks are assigned, listen to the Security Now 297 podcast starting 36 minutes in. Steve Gibson relates what he went through asking for some IPv6 addresses from his ISP for his T1 lines so he can experiment with it.

Cogent, his T1 provider, only doles out IPv6 in blocks of several BILLION addresses, even to individuals.

I can see it now, when in the year 2050 we max out IPv6 because every single nanite particle on the planet needs an IP address, and they our decedents curse us for our short sightedness.... :)

After catching up with a number of extra-interesting security news of the week, Steve and Leo explore the recently raised suggestion that using a three word "pass-sentence" such as “I like tomatoes” would be MORE secure (and far more memorable) than "J4f6<2". Short sentences are certainly easier to remember... but more secure?
