my DSL provider just rolled out new infrastructure, so i am getting a nice upgrade soon. going from 15/1 to 25/5 service. definitely looking forward to the upload boost!

i'll post back with results after the upgrade (in about a week).

indeed...i pay $47 or something for my current level...it goes up to $75+ for the 25/5.

fiber is also going in by me, but i don't think the service will be available any time soon.

At least I've got something.....Frontier DSL in the boonies. Comcast wire is within 1/2 mile of the house but not coming up the road soon

Well as I've stated before, that SpeedTest.Net test is rather bogus because it measures "Burst Speed" by testing transfer rates on very small files. This is fine for downloading web page elements, but those numbers may not be what you get in a sustained file transfer. I suspect SpeedTest.Net is owned or gets a substantial kickback from Comcast since it seems to particularly inflate Comcast numbers.

For instance here's my numbers, which I know are entirely rubbish because I know exactly how fast my connection is when I'm downloading and uploading large files:

well,, w/speedtest.net mine was similar to wvjohn's { even tho i am not in the boonies

}, ~ 2.88 / 0.73
{ it is rated 3.3/5 to the left o' the d/l speed }

w/ wugnet it shows 2.87 Mbps / 727 Kbps

tried wugnet and barely got 6Mbps down...tried my local ISP test and got this:

i've had good results with speedtest.net, but can understand the concern due to commercial influence.

speaking of internet, i just got home and found my ISP shipped the new dsl modem to me already...but my appt for install isn't until next week. since i don't need a monkey to come out and plug it in and test the line, i'm going to try and call them now to see if they'll just let me do it. i am assuming they have to provision it somehow and authenticate the modem, but fingers crossed...

updated...called to ask about self setup...while waiting on hold i got the new modem up and running and it connected immediately, but at the existing speeds. makes sense, as they need to provision it for the new service. i was then told it won't happen until the scheduled date, as they need to physically move me to a new port at the dslam. so close...hahaha
