Managed Switch Woes!

Post by eGoCeNTRoNiX »

Hey All,

I'm working with a project now that involved two managed switches (AT-8326GB) using two GBICs to connect between them using Fiber. Then from each switch I'm going Cat5 to the other PCs on the network. I'm trying to log into and program these switches and I'm not having much luck. I have tried using a DB9 cable to hook up via HyperTerminal but I don't get anything that way but a blank screen. I've also tried to hook up over the web interface, but I don't know the IP of the switch. The documentation says once it is assigned an IP you can log in with it, but I'm unable to determine what this IP might be. Am I just using the wrong type of software? They will both connect which is great, but I was really wantint to see what else they can do and get some experience messing with them. Any info would be appreciated.. I've googled without much luck..

Very Helpful, I'll add that to my toolkit. I used Angry and it didn't turn up the IP address that this did.. But it still would not allow me to log into the switch. I guess I'm just lucky they're both open on the GBICs and not on the the Copper RJ45 connectors.. I had another switch that was closed on both GBICs, one that was open on one and closed on the other and this one that is open on both. So hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to make everything talk together nicely. If anybody else figures out what I could be doing wrong LMK!

The DB9 connection should work, or there's something seriously wrong. You use the proper serial port settings?

Yup.. I've tried it on all three that I have and I don't get any screen what so ever.. It says "Connected" but I can't type anything and only have the cursor blinking at me.. Is there a key command I'm supposed to be entering that I'm not aware of?

I wonder.... Now that I'm thinking about it.. It says to use a "straight through" cable.. I'm wondering if by some strange chance the cable I have is a "cross over".. If so, I'll have to throw a null modem between it and the connectors to get it to work properly.. I have access to one and I'll try that tomorrow. I'll kick myself in the ass if that's the case..

your ports aren't locked/assigned to a specific mac address are they. that will cause problems. you might have to disconenect everything, and power up with only one connection between the server and the switch.
