hi I am not very computer litterate so I gotta ask. I have DSL. i am connected at 100mbps Why can I only download things at about 28kbps. Shouldn't there be a way to download much faster? Any Tweaking ideas very appreciated. Thanks

ISP's like to use certain terminology to sell their bandwidth because it sounds better. you are dealing with 2 different units of measure.


mbps=megabits per sec
mBps=megabytes per second
8mb=1MB

even with this in mind, you will very rarely get the full bandwidth, usually around 80% of what they give you as your maximum; depending on how many people are active on your service at that particular time.

So there is basically no way to beable to download faster without talking to my service provider? Thanks For Your info. GP

who is your service provider? You should be able to download a lot faster than that. Have you tried restarting your modem? There should be a power switch on it somewhere. Turn it off (or unplug it from power source) for 10 seconds, plug back in and see what your speeds are. Some one here will get you going or point you in the right direction.

Not to play you for a fool, but are you sure it's DSL? I have a client that was telling me about their "DSL" and it turns out it was just PeoplePC Dial Up with their DialUp Accelorator. DSL isn't available where she is, but apparently PeoplePC thought they could make the sale by telling her this was DSL.

Shouldn't 100 mbps be downloading at 125 kbps instead of 28?

100mbps is the speed of the network card to the dsl modem so yes your connected at that speed, but that is meaningless. The actual speed is a fraction of that, and i see about 20-30kbps at my friends house. So unless your paying more than 15-30 for basic dsl everything is fine.

28 KBps is not slower than dial-up. That translates to 224 Kbps which is about 400% faster than dial-up.

What DSL service do you have? If it's Bellsouth DSL Lite then its appropriate.

That is an incorrect statement for DSL. DSL is a guranteed bandwidth based upon DISTANCE from the CO. Cable internet, however, does have the restrictions of the statement above due to it being shared bandwidth (i.e. 50 Mbps is pumped into a neighborhood and if the service is 3 Mbps and 50 people have it, you're realistically only going to see 1Mbps given that everybody is using their connection at the same time.). DSL speeds should never be affected and if they are it's most likely a network issue. Cable speeds differ depending upon usage around you, which is why cable internet is "faster" during non-peak hours.
