when I or anyone else try's to access my shares via a network.. be it my home or here at a Lan.. they get this msg...
//device is not accesable. you might not have permsion to use this resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Acess denied..
Idea's???
thanks..

I ran into this problem a while back, and the only way I found to fix it was to unshare the files and reshare them.. Then they were accessible, but as soon as something new was added to the folder you had to redo the permissions.. Not sure wtf caused it, but a repair install made it better.. lol

Well the answer tpo this is going to depend on a lot of things:
- What OS (XP home or Pro)?
- If XP Pro are you using simple file sharing?
- If using Pro and not using simple file sharing, do you have permissions for the folders set to give "Everyone" full access?
The easiest way to setup network shares is to use simple file sharing (this is the only option in XP Home). It avoids security issues.

I've also had issues where NTFS security settings cause that error message across the network. I don't know why but once I added NTFS security permission it started working.

tried simple file sharing.. tried permission based.. same results..
going to look into adding NTFS Security permissions.. if I can find out how..

The way sharing works when simple sharing is off is the share permissions get applied on top of the ntfs permissions. Whatever is more restrictive is what the permission end up being.
For most things at home I usually set the share permission for everyone to have full control. Then I manage more exact permissions with ntfs. Unless its a folder I want to give most people read only access to in that case I set the share permission to read only and give the guest read access to the folder.
Ohh yea you need the guest account enabled to share to people without requiring them to authenticate to your computer. I never use simple file sharing it gets in the way of setting up a lot of the more complicated configurations so I don't know if when you share a folder it automatically turns on the guest account or what.

figure it was time to format and reload the box..
Only thing that was a PITA.. had to disonccet all my other drives so it would read the SATA Raptor as the C:

Not aware of any update that would screw up file shares. Wierd. You haven't got any 3rd party firewall installed like Norton Internet Security, do you?

NORTON.. OMG.. pls.. like I would use that crap..
as far as "3rd Party" security stuff. I had yet to put ANYTHING on the box.. no AV. no FW.. nothing.. just put like FF.. ACDsee and the software for the SB card. and TV Tuner.. and those updates.. worked before the updates.. broken after.. thus thats why I think they did it..
Also. the initial problem. started. AFTER I did the updates at the Lan NYE when I got the software from Duckie.. making be belive that is the culprit..
ahh well like I said. Live and Learn..
Fresh Installs of xp are so nice.. and clean..
