Connecting 2 pc's, different OS

Can you connect 2 pc's with different operating systems? eg win XP and win 98SE, to share the printer and broadband connection?

Yes you can.. You just need to run the network setup wizard in XP then use the network install disk that it makes on the 98SE computer and it will set it up for the network.

Can you conect the 2 pcs together directly, or do you have to have a router or hub?

You can use a cross over cable between the two computers, or connect them both to a switch. If you're sharing Internet then you want a Dsl/Cable Router with a built-in switch.
