I'm seeing some newer ethernet pci adapters saying 10/100 and 1000, is that suppose to give faster speeds or what?

To my knowledge the only thing the gig connections is good for at this point is if you have two machine talking over a network and both have a gig NIC in them. Dont look for faster speed from you cable modem etc because you have a gig Ethernet card connecting to it though.

You also have to have a Gigabit switch as well.

Gigabit has no practical value for a home user unless you're transfering large files (like video files). I swapped out my house network switch for a gigabit switch and am using a Gigabit NIC in my file server and workstation because I do a lot of video editing and store the files on the server.

In a small office LAN unless you're transferring large files you usually only want the server on a gigabit port on the router, and all other workstations on 100 Mbit ports so no one hogs the bandwidth to the server.

What FP said. If you're frequently transferring large files ("large" >= 500Mb), gigabit ethernet (GbE) is worth it just in time savings. There *is* a pretty signifigant performance different between 10/100 and GbE, but if you're not doing lots of file transfers, it isn't worth the price for most folks.

That is how my company does the network, except the server is on 100 and all the workstations are stuck on 10

Ditto... but im working on getting it all up to gig backbone and 100 everywhere and gig to the servers... but it isnt something that will happen over night.

secondary benefit would be relating to heavy LAN gaming, which most people just don't do it really isn't worth the investment in my opinion.

what LAN game can benifit from GigE?

Well not gaming. You don't need gigabit for gaming. But as we all know a fair amount of file swapping occurs at LANs and Gigabit greatly helps there.

yea thats how we run LOTL.. dual gig between the banks of tables all going back up to a gig switch.
