I have a client that wants to have a moblie computer (a setup in a van) that drives around the city. They want to be able to have (as close to as possible) an always on connection. Would a cell phone work? I havent used internet on the cell phone. I know some companies offer options. The connection would mainly be used when the vehicle was parked somewhere. I would be small amounts of data transfer every 10 minutes or so.

Thoughts?

I'm using Sprint PCS for Cell phone. For $15 a month (a fee you pay anyway if you have a camera phone and want unlimited uploads) you get unlimited internet access through the phone.

You need to buy the FutureDial cable and software (either from their website or you can get them at Radio Shack). This allows you to connect the phone to your computer via USB. Sprint doesn't support this themselves, you need to get the cable and software from FutureDial.

It works very well. I use it in central and south Florida. At least as good as a dialup, slightly better most of the time. GIFs and JPGs are ultra compressed to speed up data transfer (makes them look slightly grainier - but totally acceptable).

Most cellular companies support unlimited Internet for around $15 a month off the phone. Go to FutureDial's website and make sure the phone is supported before you buy a new one.

Is than in an urban area? I know Verizon is introducing wireless WAN broadband in the Dallas/Ft Worth area along with 25 or so other markets (according to their ads). They say typical speeds are 300-500kbps in urban areas. Don't know anyone who has used it before, so I can't comment on reliability, etc. Maybe you can find something on http://www.broadbandreports.com/?
